The name Salome is derived from the Hebrew word "shalom," meaning peace.1. Salome, the Disciple of Jesus: Salome is identified as one of the women who followed Jesus and ministered to Him during His earthly ministry. She is often considered to be the mother of the apostles James and John, the sons of Zebedee. This connection is made through a comparison of the Gospel accounts, where she is mentioned by name in Mark 15:40: "Some women were there, watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome." In Matthew 27:56, a similar group is described, but instead of Salome, the text refers to "the mother of the sons of Zebedee," suggesting that Salome is indeed their mother. Salome's devotion to Jesus is further highlighted by her presence at the crucifixion and her role in the events following His death. In Mark 16:1, she is one of the women who went to the tomb to anoint Jesus' body: "When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so they could go and anoint Him." This act of devotion underscores her commitment and faithfulness to Jesus, even in the face of danger and uncertainty. 2. Salome, the Daughter of Herodias: The second Salome is known for her involvement in the execution of John the Baptist. She is the daughter of Herodias and is not named directly in the Gospel accounts, but her identity is confirmed by historical sources such as the writings of the Jewish historian Josephus. Her account is recounted in Mark 6:17-29 and Matthew 14:3-11. Herod Antipas, the tetrarch of Galilee, had married Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, which John the Baptist publicly condemned. During Herod's birthday celebration, Salome performed a dance that pleased Herod and his guests. In response, Herod promised to grant her any request, up to half his kingdom. Prompted by her mother, Salome asked for the head of John the Baptist on a platter. Though distressed, Herod fulfilled her request due to his oaths and the presence of his guests. This Salome's actions, influenced by her mother, led to the martyrdom of John the Baptist, a pivotal event in the New Testament narrative. Her account serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of manipulation and the misuse of power. In summary, the name Salome in the New Testament is associated with both faithful discipleship and tragic intrigue. The first Salome exemplifies devotion and service to Jesus, while the second is remembered for her role in the unjust death of a prophet. Both women, though different in their actions and legacy, are integral to the Gospel narratives. Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary SalomeSmith's Bible Dictionary Salome(peaceful).
ATS Bible Dictionary SalomeWife of Zebedee, mother of James the elder and John the evangelist, one of those holy women of Galilee who attended our Savior in his journeys and ministered to him, Mt 20...20-23. Her conception as to the true nature of Christ's kingdom were no doubt changed by his crucifixion, which she witnessed "afar off," and by his resurrection, of which she was early apprized by the angels at the tomb, Mark 15:40; 16:1. Some infer, from comparing Matthew 27:56 and John 19:25, that she was a sister of Mary the mother of Jesus. Salome was also the name of the daughter of Herodias. Easton's Bible Dictionary Perfect. (1.) The wife of Zebedee and mother of James and John (Matthew 27:56), and probably the sister of Mary, the mother of our Lord (John 19:25). She sought for her sons places of honour in Christ's kingdom (Matthew 20:20, 21; Comp. 19:28). She witnessed the crucifixion (Mark 15:40), and was present with the other women at the sepulchre (Matthew 27:56). (2.) "The daughter of Herodias," not named in the New Testament. On the occasion of the birthday festival held by Herod Antipas, who had married her mother Herodias, in the fortress of Machaerus, she "came in and danced, and pleased Herod" (Mark 6:14-29). John the Baptist, at that time a prisoner in the dungeons underneath the castle, was at her request beheaded by order of Herod, and his head given to the damsel in a charger, "and the damsel gave it to her mother," whose revengeful spirit was thus gratified. "A luxurious feast of the period" (says Farrar, Life of Christ) "was not regarded as complete unless it closed with some gross pantomimic representation; and doubtless Herod had adopted the evil fashion of his day. But he had not anticipated for his guests the rare luxury of seeing a princess, his own niece, a grand-daughter of Herod the Great and of Mariamne, a descendant, therefore, of Simon the high priest and the great line of Maccabean princes, a princess who afterwards became the wife of a tetrarch [Philip, tetrarch of Trachonitis] and the mother of a king, honouring them by degrading herself into a scenic dancer."
