Sexual Purity

Sexual purity is a significant theme throughout the Bible, emphasizing the importance of maintaining moral integrity and holiness in matters of sexuality. It is rooted in the understanding that human sexuality is a gift from God, intended to be expressed within the boundaries of marriage between one man and one woman. This entry explores the biblical foundation for sexual purity, its implications for believers, and the consequences of sexual immorality.

Biblical Foundation

The concept of sexual purity is grounded in the creation narrative, where God establishes marriage as a sacred union. Genesis 2:24 states, "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh." This verse underscores the exclusivity and permanence of the marital relationship, setting the standard for sexual conduct.

The Ten Commandments further reinforce the call to sexual purity. Exodus 20:14 commands, "You shall not commit adultery," highlighting the importance of faithfulness within marriage. Adultery is consistently condemned throughout Scripture as a violation of the marriage covenant and an affront to God's design.

In the New Testament, Jesus intensifies the call to purity by addressing the heart's intentions. In Matthew 5:27-28 , He teaches, "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart." This passage emphasizes that sexual purity is not merely about external actions but also about internal thoughts and desires.

Implications for Believers

Believers are called to live lives that reflect God's holiness, including in their sexual conduct. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 instructs, "For it is God’s will that you should be holy: You must abstain from sexual immorality; each of you must know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God." This passage highlights the expectation for Christians to exercise self-control and honor God with their bodies.

The Apostle Paul further exhorts believers in 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 , "Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a man can commit is outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body." Here, Paul emphasizes the spiritual significance of the believer's body as a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit, urging them to honor God through sexual purity.

Consequences of Sexual Immorality

The Bible warns of the severe consequences of sexual immorality, both spiritually and relationally. Proverbs 6:32-33 cautions, "He who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself. Wounds and dishonor will befall him, and his reproach will never be wiped away." This passage highlights the destructive nature of sexual sin, leading to personal and social disgrace.

In the New Testament, sexual immorality is listed among the works of the flesh that prevent inheritance of the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21 states, "The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery... those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." This warning underscores the eternal implications of unrepentant sexual sin.

Redemption and Restoration

Despite the gravity of sexual sin, the Bible offers hope for redemption and restoration through Jesus Christ. 1 John 1:9 assures, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." This promise of forgiveness is available to all who repent and turn to God, allowing them to pursue a life of sexual purity empowered by the Holy Spirit.
