The Influence of Authority and Expertise

In the biblical narrative, the concepts of authority and expertise are pivotal, shaping the lives and decisions of individuals and communities. Authority, as depicted in the Scriptures, is often divinely ordained, while expertise is portrayed as a gift from God, meant to be used for His glory and the benefit of His people.

Divine Authority

The Bible consistently emphasizes the ultimate authority of God over all creation. In Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth," we see the foundational assertion of God's sovereign authority. This divine authority is further underscored in passages such as Isaiah 45:12, where God declares, "It is I who made the earth and created man upon it. My own hands stretched out the heavens, and I commanded all their host."

Human authority, as established by God, is meant to reflect His divine order. Romans 13:1-2 instructs, "Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God. Consequently, whoever resists authority is opposing what God has set in place, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves." This passage highlights the belief that earthly authority is instituted by God and should be respected as such.

Spiritual Authority

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is presented as the ultimate authority in spiritual matters. In Matthew 28:18 , Jesus proclaims, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me." His teachings and actions demonstrate His authority over nature, sin, and death, as seen in His miracles and His resurrection. The apostles, as His chosen representatives, were endowed with authority to teach and lead the early church, as seen in Acts 1:8 : "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Expertise and Wisdom

The Bible also acknowledges the importance of expertise and wisdom, often linking them to divine inspiration. In Exodus 31:3-5 , God says of Bezalel, "And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, understanding, and ability in all kinds of craftsmanship, to design artistic works in gold, silver, and bronze, to cut gemstones for settings, and to carve wood, so that he may be a master of every craft." This passage illustrates how God equips individuals with specific skills for His purposes.

Proverbs, a book dedicated to wisdom, frequently extols the value of knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 1:7 states, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline." Here, expertise is rooted in a reverence for God, suggesting that true wisdom is both a divine gift and a moral responsibility.

The Role of Leaders

Biblical leaders are often depicted as those who wield authority and expertise for the good of the people. Moses, for example, is chosen by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, equipped with divine authority and the wisdom to govern. In Deuteronomy 34:9 , it is noted, "Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the LORD had commanded Moses."

Similarly, King Solomon is renowned for his wisdom, a gift from God that he used to govern Israel. In 1 Kings 3:12 , God says to Solomon, "Behold, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there has never been anyone like you, nor will there ever be."

Conclusion

The influence of authority and expertise in the Bible is profound, with both being seen as divinely sanctioned and essential for the fulfillment of God's purposes. Authority is to be respected as part of God's order, while expertise is to be cultivated and used in service to Him and His people. Through these gifts, individuals are called to lead, teach, and build up the community of faith, always acknowledging the ultimate authority of God.
