False Doctrines: Teachers of Speak Perverse Things

In the New Testament, the issue of false doctrines and those who propagate them is addressed with significant concern. The Apostle Paul, in particular, warns the early church about individuals who would arise to distort the truth and lead believers astray. These individuals are often described as teachers who "speak perverse things," a phrase that captures the essence of their deceptive and corrupt teachings.

Biblical Warnings and Descriptions

The Apostle Paul, in his farewell address to the Ephesian elders, provides a poignant warning about the emergence of false teachers. In Acts 20:29-30 , he states, "I know that after my departure, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number, men will rise up and distort the truth to draw away disciples after them." Here, Paul uses the metaphor of "savage wolves" to describe the destructive nature of these false teachers. The phrase "distort the truth" indicates their tendency to twist and pervert sound doctrine for their own purposes.

Paul's epistles further elaborate on the characteristics and motivations of these false teachers. In 1 Timothy 6:3-5 , he writes, "If anyone teaches another doctrine and disagrees with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and with godly teaching, he is conceited and understands nothing. Instead, he has an unhealthy interest in controversies and semantics, out of which come envy, strife, abusive talk, evil suspicions, and constant friction between men of depraved mind who are devoid of the truth." This passage highlights the pride and ignorance of those who deviate from the teachings of Christ, as well as the divisive and contentious nature of their doctrines.

Characteristics of False Teachers

False teachers are often characterized by their self-serving motives and their ability to manipulate and deceive. In 2 Peter 2:1-3 , the Apostle Peter warns, "But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow in their depravity, and because of them the way of truth will be defamed. In their greed, they will exploit you with deceptive words." Peter emphasizes the secretive and insidious nature of these teachers, as well as their greed and the damage they cause to the reputation of the Christian faith.

Jude also addresses the issue of false teachers in his epistle, describing them as individuals who "pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ" (Jude 1:4). This highlights their tendency to misuse the concept of grace to justify sinful behavior, ultimately denying the authority of Christ.

The Call to Discernment

The New Testament consistently calls believers to be vigilant and discerning in the face of false doctrines. In 1 John 4:1 , the Apostle John advises, "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world." This exhortation underscores the importance of testing teachings against the truth of Scripture to ensure their alignment with the gospel of Christ.

Paul, in his letter to the Galatians, expresses his astonishment at how quickly some were deserting the true gospel for a different one, which he clarifies is no gospel at all (Galatians 1:6-7). He emphasizes that even if an angel from heaven should preach a gospel contrary to the one they received, it should be rejected (Galatians 1:8).

Conclusion

The New Testament provides clear guidance on recognizing and responding to false doctrines and those who teach them. Believers are called to uphold the truth of the gospel, remain steadfast in sound doctrine, and exercise discernment to protect the integrity of their faith.
