Miracles: should be Remembered

In the biblical narrative, miracles serve as divine interventions that reveal God's power, authority, and presence among His people. These supernatural acts are not only historical events but also serve as theological signposts that point to God's character and His covenantal relationship with humanity. The remembrance of miracles is a recurring theme in Scripture, emphasizing the importance of recalling God's mighty works to strengthen faith and encourage obedience.

Old Testament Miracles

The Old Testament is replete with miraculous events that demonstrate God's sovereignty and faithfulness. One of the most significant is the parting of the Red Sea, where God delivered the Israelites from Egyptian bondage. In Exodus 14:21-22 , it is recorded, "Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the LORD drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. So the waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on their right and on their left." This miracle is commemorated in the Song of Moses (Exodus 15) and serves as a foundational event in Israel's history, symbolizing God's deliverance and power.

The provision of manna in the wilderness is another miracle that underscores God's provision and care. In Exodus 16:4 , the LORD says to Moses, "Behold, I will rain down bread from heaven for you. Each day the people are to go out and gather enough for that day." This daily miracle taught the Israelites reliance on God and was to be remembered as a testament to His sustenance.

New Testament Miracles

In the New Testament, the miracles of Jesus Christ are central to His ministry and reveal His divine nature. The feeding of the five thousand, as recorded in Matthew 14:19-21 , is a profound example: "And He directed the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, He blessed them. Then He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over." This miracle not only demonstrates Jesus' compassion but also His authority over creation.

The resurrection of Jesus is the pinnacle of New Testament miracles, affirming His victory over sin and death. In 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 , Paul emphasizes its importance: "For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures." The resurrection is to be remembered as the cornerstone of Christian faith, offering hope and assurance of eternal life.

Purpose and Remembrance

Miracles in the Bible serve multiple purposes: they authenticate God's messengers, confirm His word, and reveal His nature. In Deuteronomy 4:9 , the Israelites are admonished, "Only be on your guard and diligently watch yourselves, so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen, and so that they do not slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and grandchildren." This command underscores the importance of remembering and teaching about God's miraculous works to future generations.

The Psalms often recount God's miraculous deeds as a means of worship and remembrance. Psalm 77:11 declares, "I will remember the works of the LORD; yes, I will remember Your wonders of old." Such remembrance serves to inspire faith, encourage trust in God's promises, and foster a spirit of gratitude.

In the New Testament, the Lord's Supper is instituted as a memorial of Christ's sacrificial death and resurrection. In 1 Corinthians 11:24-25 , Jesus instructs, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me... This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." This ordinance serves as a continual reminder of the miracle of redemption and the new covenant established through Christ's blood.

In summary, the remembrance of miracles is a vital aspect of biblical faith, serving to reinforce the believer's trust in God's power and faithfulness throughout history.
