The concept of gifts is woven throughout Scripture, encompassing both material and spiritual dimensions.Old Testament Context In the Old Testament, gifts often refer to offerings made to God, as well as the blessings bestowed by Him upon His people. The Israelites were instructed to bring gifts to the Lord as part of their worship and sacrificial system. For example, in Exodus 23:15, the Israelites are commanded, "No one is to appear before Me empty-handed." These gifts were expressions of gratitude, devotion, and obedience to God. Gifts also include the talents and abilities given by God to individuals for specific purposes. Bezalel and Oholiab, for instance, were endowed with skills and wisdom to construct the Tabernacle (Exodus 31:1-6). These gifts were divinely appointed for the fulfillment of God's plans. New Testament Context In the New Testament, the concept of gifts expands to include spiritual gifts bestowed by the Holy Spirit upon believers. These gifts are intended for the edification of the church and the advancement of the Gospel. The Apostle Paul provides a comprehensive list of spiritual gifts in several of his epistles. In Romans 12:6-8, Paul writes, "We have different gifts according to the grace given to us. If one's gift is prophecy, let him use it in proportion to his faith; if it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is giving, let him give generously; if it is leading, let him lead with diligence; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully." Similarly, in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, Paul elaborates on the diversity of spiritual gifts, emphasizing that they all originate from the same Spirit and are given for the common good. These include wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, discernment of spirits, speaking in tongues, and interpretation of tongues. Purpose and Use of Gifts The primary purpose of spiritual gifts is to build up the body of Christ. Ephesians 4:11-13 states, "And He gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for works of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as we mature to the full measure of the stature of Christ." Gifts are to be exercised in love and humility, as Paul emphasizes in 1 Corinthians 13, the famous "love chapter." Without love, the exercise of spiritual gifts is meaningless and unprofitable. Diversity and Unity While there is a diversity of gifts, there is also a call for unity among believers. The various gifts are meant to complement one another, fostering interdependence within the church. In 1 Corinthians 12:12-14, Paul uses the analogy of the body to illustrate this point: "For just as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also is Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free, and we were all given one Spirit to drink." Conclusion The biblical teaching on gifts underscores the generosity of God and His desire for His people to participate in His work. Whether through material offerings, natural talents, or spiritual endowments, gifts are a vital aspect of the believer's life and service to God. They are to be used responsibly, with a heart of gratitude and a focus on glorifying God and edifying others. ATS Bible Dictionary GiftsHave been common from the earliest times as tokens of affection, honor, or respect. The dues to a king were often rendered in this form, 1 Samuel 10:27 Isaiah 36:16; and men of high position were approached with presents, Genesis 43:11 Jud 6:18 1 Samuel 9:7 1 Kings 14:3. Kings made gifts of garments to those they wished to honor, Genesis 45:22,23 1 Samuel 18:4; and of treasures to other princes, out of esteem or of fear, 2 Kings 16:8 18:14 2 Chronicles 9:9,12. Conquerors scattered gifts from their triumphal cars, and special privileges in token of generous joy, Psalm 68:18 Acts 1:2,4. Prophets received gifts, or declined them, as duty required, 2 Kings 5:15 8:9 Daniel 2:48 5:17. The word gifts often denotes bribes, Exodus 23:8 Psalm 15:5 Isaiah 5:23. The same word is also applied to the offerings required by the law, De 16:17 Matthew 5:23,24; to the blessings of the gospel and eternal life, which are preeminently gifts, Acts 8:20; to the Christian grace, for the same reason, Ephesians 4:8,11; and to the miraculous endowments of the apostles, 1 1 Corinthians 12:1-14:40. See TONGUES. Easton's Bible Dictionary Gifts, spiritual(Gr. charismata), gifts supernaturally bestowed on the early Christians, each having his own proper gift or gifts for the edification of the body of Christ. These were the result of the extraordinary operation of the Spirit, as on the day of Pentecost. They were the gifts of speaking with tongues, casting out devils, healing, etc. (Mark 16:17, 18), usually communicated by the medium of the laying on of the hands of the apostles (Acts 8:17; 19:6; 1 Timothy 4:14). These charismata were enjoyed only for a time. They could not continue always in the Church. They were suited to its infancy and to the necessities of those times.
