Tribe of Ephraim: Offering of, at the Dedication

The Tribe of Ephraim, one of the twelve tribes of Israel, holds a significant place in biblical history. Ephraim was the younger son of Joseph, born to him in Egypt, and was blessed by Jacob, who placed him before his elder brother Manasseh (Genesis 48:13-20). This tribe became one of the most prominent in the Northern Kingdom of Israel.

During the dedication of the altar, as recorded in the Book of Numbers, each tribe of Israel was called upon to present offerings. The offerings were part of the consecration of the Tabernacle, a central place of worship for the Israelites during their wilderness journey. The dedication ceremony is detailed in Numbers 7, where each tribe's leader brought offerings over twelve days.

The leader of the Tribe of Ephraim at the time was Elishama son of Ammihud. On the seventh day, Elishama presented the offering on behalf of his tribe. The Berean Standard Bible records the offering as follows:

"On the seventh day Elishama son of Ammihud, the leader of the Ephraimites, drew near. His offering was one silver platter weighing 130 shekels, one silver sprinkling bowl weighing 70 shekels, both according to the sanctuary shekel, each filled with fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering; one gold dish weighing ten shekels, filled with incense; one young bull, one ram, and one male lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; one male goat for a sin offering; and two oxen, five rams, five male goats, and five male lambs a year old, to present as a peace offering." (Numbers 7:48-53)

The offerings from the Tribe of Ephraim, like those from the other tribes, were significant in their symbolism and purpose. The silver and gold items represented wealth and dedication to God, while the animals offered were for various types of sacrifices: burnt offerings, sin offerings, and peace offerings. These sacrifices were integral to the Israelites' worship and covenant relationship with God, serving as a means of atonement, thanksgiving, and fellowship.

The Tribe of Ephraim's participation in the dedication of the altar underscores its role and responsibility within the community of Israel. As one of the leading tribes, Ephraim's offering was a demonstration of their commitment to the covenant and their place within the collective worship of Yahweh. The detailed account of their offering reflects the importance of each tribe's contribution to the spiritual life of the nation.
