The Zamzummim are mentioned in the Old Testament as one of the ancient peoples who inhabited the land of Canaan before the arrival of the Israelites. They are referenced in Deuteronomy 2:20-21, where they are described as a people great, numerous, and tall, like the Anakim. The passage states: "That too was regarded as a land of the Rephaim. The Rephaim lived there formerly, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim, a people great and many, and tall as the Anakim. But the LORD destroyed them before the Ammonites, who drove them out and settled in their place" (Deuteronomy 2:20-21).

The Zamzummim are often associated with the Rephaim, a term used in the Hebrew Bible to describe a group of ancient giants or mighty warriors. The Rephaim are mentioned in various contexts, often as formidable opponents or as inhabitants of the land that God promised to the descendants of Abraham. The connection between the Zamzummim and the Rephaim suggests that they were considered part of this larger group of ancient peoples known for their size and strength.

The biblical narrative indicates that the Zamzummim, like other pre-Israelite inhabitants of Canaan, were displaced by the descendants of Lot, specifically the Ammonites. This displacement is attributed to divine intervention, as the LORD is said to have destroyed the Zamzummim before the Ammonites, allowing them to take possession of the land. This reflects a recurring theme in the Old Testament, where God is portrayed as actively guiding the settlement of the land by the descendants of Abraham and his relatives.

The mention of the Zamzummim in the context of the conquest narratives serves to underscore the fulfillment of God's promises to the patriarchs regarding the land of Canaan. It also highlights the divine orchestration of historical events to establish the Israelites and their kin in the territories allotted to them. The displacement of the Zamzummim by the Ammonites is part of a broader pattern of divine judgment and providence that characterizes the biblical account of the conquest and settlement of the Promised Land.

In summary, the Zamzummim are depicted in the Bible as an ancient and formidable people, part of the larger group known as the Rephaim. Their displacement by the Ammonites, under divine direction, is a testament to God's sovereignty and the unfolding of His plan for the descendants of Abraham.

Zamzummim

(Deuteronomy 2:20) only, the Ammonite name for the people who by others were called Rephaim. They are described as having originally been a powerful and numerous nation of giants. From a slight similarity between the two names, and from the mention of the Emim in connection with each, it is conjectured that the Zamzummim are identical with the Zuzim.
