The List of Returning Exiles
(Nehemiah 7:4–69)

1Now these are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles carried away to Babylon (confusion by mixing) by Nebuchadnezzar (may Nebo protect the crown) its king. They returned to Jerusalem (city of peace) and Judah (praised), each to his own town, 2accompanied by Zerubbabel (sown in Babylon), Jeshua (he is saved), Nehemiah (YHWH comforts), Seraiah (YHWH is ruler), Reelaiah (bearer of YHWH), Mordecai (little man), Bilshan (in slander), Mispar (number), Bigvai (in my bodies), Rehum (compassion), and Baanah <Neh 7:7>.a

This is the count of the men of Israel (he wrestles with God):

3the descendants of Parosh (flea), 2,172;

4the descendants of Shephatiah (YHWH has judged), 372;

5the descendants of Arah (traveller), 775;

6the descendants of Pahath-moab (pit of Moab) (through the line of Jeshua (he is saved) and Joab (YHWH is father)), 2,812;

7the descendants of Elam (eternity), 1,254;

8the descendants of Zattu (brightness of him), 945;

9the descendants of Zaccai (pure), 760;

10the descendants of Bani (Binnui),b 642;

11the descendants of Bebai (my cavities), 623;

12the descendants of Azgad (Gad is mighty), 1,222;

13the descendants of Adonikam (my lord arose), 666;

14the descendants of Bigvai (in my bodies), 2,056;

15the descendants of Adin (delicate), 454;

The descendants of Jedaiah (YHWH has known) (through the house of Jeshua (he is saved)), 973;

39and the descendants of Harim (dedicated), 1,017.

40The Levites:

the descendants of Jeshua (he is saved) and Kadmiel (God is the ancient one) (through the line of Hodaviah (Hodevah)i), 74.

41The singers:

the descendants of Asaph (gatherer), 128.

42The gatekeepers:

the descendants of Shallum (retribution),

the descendants of Ater (binder),

the descendants of Talmon (oppressor),

the descendants of Akkub (insidious),

the descendants of Hatita (exploring),

and the descendants of Shobai (glorious),

139 in all.

the descendants of Hasupha (stripped),

the descendants of Tabbaoth (rings),

44the descendants of Keros (ankle),

the descendants of Reaiah (YHWH has seen),

48the descendants of Rezin (firm),

the descendants of Nekoda (distinguished),

the descendants of Gazzam (devouring),

49the descendants of Uzza (strength),

the descendants of Paseah (limper),

the descendants of Besai (my treading),

50the descendants of Asnah (I shall be hated),

the descendants of Meunim (habitations),

the descendants of Nephusim (Nephushesim),m

51the descendants of Bakbuk (bottle),

the descendants of Hakupha (bent),

the descendants of Harhur (inflammation),

52the descendants of Bazluth (Bazlith),n

the descendants of Mehida (famous / noble),

the descendants of Harsha (mute),

53the descendants of Barkos (the son cut off),

the descendants of Sisera (battle array),

the descendants of Temah (laughter),

54the descendants of Neziah (pre-eminent),

and the descendants of Hatipha (seized).

55The descendants of the servants of Solomon (peace):

the descendants of Sotai (changeful),

the descendants of Hassophereth (writing),

the descendants of Peruda (Perida),o

56the descendants of Jaala (ascending),

the descendants of Darkon (scatterer),

the descendants of Giddel (very great),

57the descendants of Shephatiah (YHWH has judged),

the descendants of Hattil (doubtful),

the descendants of Pochereth-hazzebaim (here the cutting off),

and the descendants of Ami (Amon).p

58The temple servants and descendants of the servants of Solomon (peace) numbered 392 in all.

59The following came up from Tel-melah (mound of salt), Tel-harsha (mound of the deaf mute), Cherub (blessing), Addan (Addon),q and Immer (he has said), but they could not prove that their families were descended from Israel (he wrestles with God):

60the descendants of Delaiah (YHWH has drawn),

the descendants of Tobiah (YHWH is good),

and the descendants of Nekoda (distinguished),

652 in all.

61And from among the priests: the descendants of Hobaiah (YHWH has hidden),

the descendants of Hakkoz (thorn),

and the descendants of Barzillai (my iron) (who had married a daughter of Barzillai the Gileadite (rocky region) and was called by their name).

62These men searched for their family records, but they could not find them and so were excluded from the priesthood as unclean. 63The governor ordered them not to eat the most holy things until there was a priest to consult the Urim (lights) and Thummim \Lights and Perfections/.r

64The whole assembly numbered 42,360, 65in addition to their 7,337 menservants and maidservants, as well as their 200 male and female singers. 66They had 736 horses, 245 mules, 67435 camels, and 6,720 donkeys.

Offerings by the Exiles
(Exodus 38:21–31; Nehemiah 7:70–73)

68When they arrived at the house of the LORD {YHWH} in Jerusalem (city of peace), some of the heads of the families gave freewill offerings to rebuild the house of God {Elohim} on its original site. 69According to their ability, they gave to the treasury for this work 61,000 darics of gold <1,129.7 lb / 512.4 kg>,s 5,000 minas of silver <3.14 t / 2.85 mt>,t and 100 priestly garments.

70So the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants, along with some of the people, settled in their own towns; and the rest of the Israelites (all Israel)u settled in their towns.
