Paul in Macedonia and Greece

1Now after the uproar had ceased, Paul, having summoned the disciples and having encouraged them, having said farewell, went out to go to Macedonia. 2And having passed through those districts and having exhorted them with much talk, he came to Greece. 3And having continued three months, a plot having been made against him by the Jews, in his being about to sail into Syria, a purpose arose to return through Macedonia.

4And he was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus, a Berean, and Aristarchus, and Secundus of the Thessalonians, and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy, and the Asians Tychicus and Trophimus. 5But these, having gone ahead, waited for us in Troas. 6And we sailed away from Philippi after the days of the Unleavened, and within five days we came to them at Troas, where we stayed seven days.

(2 Kings 4:18–37)

7And on the first of the week, we having come together to break bread, Paul, about to depart on the next day, talked to them and continued the talk until midnight.

8Now there were many lamps in the upper room where we were assembled. 9And a certain young man named Eutychus was sitting by the window, overcome by deep sleep in Paul talking on longer. Having been overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was picked up dead. 10But Paul, having descended, fell upon him, and having embraced him, he said, “Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him!”

11And having gone up, and having broken the bread, and having eaten, and having talked for a considerable time until daybreak, so he went out. 12Then they brought the boy alive and were not just a little comforted.

From Troas to Miletus

13But we, having gone ahead to the ship, sailed to Assos, being about to take in Paul there. For having arranged thus, he was readying himself to go on foot. 14Now when he met with us at Assos, having taken him in, we came to Mitylene. 15And having sailed away from there, on the next day we arrived opposite Chios, and the second day we arrived at Samos, and the following day we came to Miletus.

16For Paul had decided to sail by Ephesus, so that it might not come upon him to spend time in Asia; for he was hastening, if it was possible for him, to be in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost.

Paul’s Farewell to the Ephesians

17And from Miletus, having sent to Ephesus, he called for the elders of the church.

18And when they had come to him, he said to them, “You⁺ know from the first day on which I arrived in Asia, how I was with you⁺ the whole time, 19serving the Lord with all humility and tears, and in trials having befallen me in the plots of the Jews; 20how I kept back nothing of that being profitable, not to declare it to you⁺ and to teach you⁺ publicly and from house to house, 21earnestly testifying both to the Jews and to Greeks repentance to God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

22And now behold, bound in the Spirit I go to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me in it, 23except that the Holy Spirit fully testifies to me in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me. 24But on no account do I make my life dear to myself, so as to finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus: to testify fully the gospel of the grace of God.

25And now, behold, I know that all of you⁺ among whom I went about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face no more. 26Therefore I testify to you⁺ in this day that I am innocent of the blood of all. 27For I did not shrink back from proclaiming to you⁺ the whole counsel of God.

28Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock among whom the Holy Spirit has set you⁺ as overseers, to shepherd the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood. 29I know that after my departure, grievous wolves will come in among you⁺, not sparing the flock, 30and out from your⁺ own selves men will rise up, speaking perverse things to draw away disciples after them. 31Therefore stay awake, remembering that three years, night and day, I did not cease admonishing each one with tears.

32And now I commit you⁺ to God and to the word of His grace, being able to build you up and to give you an inheritance among all those having been sanctified.

33I coveted no one’s silver or gold or clothing. 34You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my needs and to those being with me. 35In everything I showed you⁺ that by thus laboring, it is necessary to aid those being weak, and also to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

36And having said these things, having bowed his knee, he prayed with them all. 37Then there was much weeping among all, and having fallen upon the neck of Paul, they were kissing him, 38sorrowing especially over the word that he had spoken, that they are about to see his face no more. And they accompanied him to the ship.
