This is the burden against Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz received: | 1The oracle concerning Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw. |
Raise a banner on a barren hilltop; call aloud to them. Wave your hand, that they may enter the gates of the nobles. | 2Lift up a standard on the bare hill, Raise your voice to them, Wave the hand that they may enter the doors of the nobles. |
I have commanded My sanctified ones; I have even summoned My warriors to execute My wrath and exult in My triumph. | 3I have commanded My consecrated ones, I have even called My mighty warriors, My proudly exulting ones, To execute My anger. |
Listen, a tumult on the mountains, like that of a great multitude! Listen, an uproar among the kingdoms, like nations gathered together! The LORD of Hosts is mobilizing an army for war. | 4A sound of tumult on the mountains, Like that of many people! A sound of the uproar of kingdoms, Of nations gathered together! The LORD of hosts is mustering the army for battle. |
They are coming from faraway lands, from the ends of the heavens—the LORD and the weapons of His wrath—to destroy the whole country. | 5They are coming from a far country, From the farthest horizons, The LORD and His instruments of indignation, To destroy the whole land. |
Wail, for the Day of the LORD is near; it will come as destruction from the Almighty. | 6Wail, for the day of the LORD is near! It will come as destruction from the Almighty. |
Therefore all hands will fall limp, and every man’s heart will melt. | 7Therefore all hands will fall limp, And every man's heart will melt. |
Terror, pain, and anguish will seize them; they will writhe like a woman in labor. They will look at one another, their faces flushed with fear. | 8They will be terrified, Pains and anguish will take hold of them; They will writhe like a woman in labor, They will look at one another in astonishment, Their faces aflame. |
Behold, the Day of the LORD is coming—cruel, with fury and burning anger—to make the earth a desolation and to destroy the sinners within it. | 9Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, Cruel, with fury and burning anger, To make the land a desolation; And He will exterminate its sinners from it. |
For the stars of heaven and their constellations will not give their light. The rising sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light. | 10For the stars of heaven and their constellations Will not flash forth their light; The sun will be dark when it rises And the moon will not shed its light. |
I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their iniquity. I will end the haughtiness of the arrogant and lay low the pride of the ruthless. | 11Thus I will punish the world for its evil And the wicked for their iniquity; I will also put an end to the arrogance of the proud And abase the haughtiness of the ruthless. |
I will make man scarcer than pure gold, and mankind rarer than the gold of Ophir. | 12I will make mortal man scarcer than pure gold And mankind than the gold of Ophir. |
Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, and the earth will be shaken from its place at the wrath of the LORD of Hosts on the day of His burning anger. | 13Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, And the earth will be shaken from its place At the fury of the LORD of hosts In the day of His burning anger. |
Like a hunted gazelle, like a sheep without a shepherd, each will return to his own people, each will flee to his native land. | 14And it will be that like a hunted gazelle, Or like sheep with none to gather them, They will each turn to his own people, And each one flee to his own land. |
Whoever is caught will be stabbed, and whoever is captured will die by the sword. | 15Anyone who is found will be thrust through, And anyone who is captured will fall by the sword. |
Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes, their houses will be looted, and their wives will be ravished. | 16Their little ones also will be dashed to pieces Before their eyes; Their houses will be plundered And their wives ravished. |
Behold, I will stir up against them the Medes, who have no regard for silver and no desire for gold. | 17Behold, I am going to stir up the Medes against them, Who will not value silver or take pleasure in gold. |
Their bows will dash young men to pieces; they will have no mercy on the fruit of the womb; they will not look with pity on the children. | 18And their bows will mow down the young men, They will not even have compassion on the fruit of the womb, Nor will their eye pity children. |
And Babylon, the jewel of the kingdoms, the glory of the pride of the Chaldeans, will be overthrown by God like Sodom and Gomorrah. | 19And Babylon, the beauty of kingdoms, the glory of the Chaldeans' pride, Will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. |
She will never be inhabited or settled from generation to generation; no nomad will pitch his tent there, no shepherd will rest his flock there. | 20It will never be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation; Nor will the Arab pitch his tent there, Nor will shepherds make their flocks lie down there. |
But desert creatures will lie down there, and howling creatures will fill her houses. Ostriches will dwell there, and wild goats will leap about. | 21But desert creatures will lie down there, And their houses will be full of owls; Ostriches also will live there, and shaggy goats will frolic there. |
Hyenas will howl in her fortresses and jackals in her luxurious palaces. Babylon’s time is at hand, and her days will not be prolonged. | 22Hyenas will howl in their fortified towers And jackals in their luxurious palaces. Her fateful time also will soon come And her days will not be prolonged. |
