And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, | 1The word of the LORD came to me: |
“O son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says to the land of Israel: ‘The end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land. | 2"You, son of man--this is what the sovereign LORD says to the land of Israel: An end! The end is coming on the four corners of the land! |
The end is now upon you, and I will unleash My anger against you. I will judge you according to your ways and repay you for all your abominations. | 3The end is now upon you, and I will release my anger against you; I will judge you according to your behavior, I will hold you accountable for all your abominable practices. |
I will not look on you with pity, nor will I spare you, but I will punish you for your ways and for the abominations among you. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’ | 4My eye will not pity you; I will not spare you. For I will hold you responsible for your behavior, and you will suffer the consequences of your abominable practices. Then you will know that I am the LORD! |
This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Disaster! An unprecedented disaster—behold, it is coming! | 5"This is what the sovereign LORD says: A disaster--a one-of-a-kind disaster--is coming! |
The end has come! The end has come! It has roused itself against you. Behold, it has come! | 6An end comes--the end comes! It has awakened against you--the end is upon you! Look, it is coming! |
Doom has come to you, O inhabitants of the land. The time has come; the day is near; there is panic on the mountains instead of shouts of joy. | 7Doom is coming upon you who live in the land! The time is coming, the day is near. There are sounds of tumult, not shouts of joy, on the mountains. |
Very soon I will pour out My wrath upon you and vent My anger against you; I will judge you according to your ways and repay you for all your abominations. | 8Soon now I will pour out my rage on you; I will fully vent my anger against you. I will judge you according to your behavior. I will hold you accountable for all your abominable practices. |
I will not look on you with pity, nor will I spare you, but I will punish you for your ways and for the abominations among you. Then you will know that it is I, the LORD, who strikes the blow. | 9My eye will not pity you; I will not spare you. For your behavior I will hold you accountable, and you will suffer the consequences of your abominable practices. Then you will know that it is I, the LORD, who is striking you. |
Behold, the day is here! It has come! Doom has gone out, the rod has budded, arrogance has bloomed. | 10"Look, the day! Look, it is coming! Doom has gone out! The staff has budded, pride has blossomed! |
Their violence has grown into a rod to punish their wickedness. None of them will remain: none of their multitude, none of their wealth, and nothing of value. | 11Violence has grown into a staff that supports wickedness. Not one of them will be left--not from their crowd, not from their wealth, not from their prominence. |
The time has come; the day has arrived. Let the buyer not rejoice and the seller not mourn, for wrath is upon the whole multitude. | 12The time has come; the day has struck! The customer should not rejoice, nor the seller mourn; for divine wrath comes against their whole crowd. |
The seller will surely not recover what he sold while both remain alive. For the vision concerning the whole multitude will not be revoked, and because of their iniquity, not one of them will preserve his life. | 13The customer will no longer pay the seller while both parties are alive, for the vision against their whole crowd will not be revoked. Each person, for his iniquity, will fail to preserve his life. |
They have blown the trumpet and made everything ready, but no one goes to war, for My wrath is upon the whole multitude. | 14"They have blown the trumpet and everyone is ready, but no one goes to battle, because my anger is against their whole crowd. |
The sword is outside; plague and famine are within. Those in the country will die by the sword, and those in the city will be devoured by famine and plague. | 15The sword is outside; pestilence and famine are inside the house. Whoever is in the open field will die by the sword, and famine and pestilence will consume everyone in the city. |
The survivors will escape and live in the mountains, moaning like doves of the valley, each for his own iniquity. | 16Their survivors will escape to the mountains and become like doves of the valleys; all of them will moan--each one for his iniquity. |
Every hand will go limp, and every knee will turn to water. | 17All of their hands will hang limp; their knees will be wet with urine. |
They will put on sackcloth, and terror will overwhelm them. Shame will cover all their faces, and all their heads will be shaved. | 18They will wear sackcloth, terror will cover them; shame will be on all their faces, and all of their heads will be shaved bald. |
They will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will seem unclean. Their silver and gold cannot save them in the day of the wrath of the LORD. They cannot satisfy their appetites or fill their stomachs with wealth, for it became the stumbling block that brought their iniquity. | 19They will discard their silver in the streets, and their gold will be treated like filth. Their silver and gold will not be able to deliver them on the day of the LORD's fury. They will not satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs because their wealth was the obstacle leading to their iniquity. |
His beautiful ornaments they transformed into pride and used them to fashion their vile images and detestable idols. Therefore I will make these into something unclean for them. | 20They rendered the beauty of his ornaments into pride, and with it they made their abominable images--their detestable idols. Therefore I will render it filthy to them. |
And I will hand these things over as plunder to foreigners and loot to the wicked of the earth, who will defile them. | 21I will give it to foreigners as loot, to the world's wicked ones as plunder, and they will desecrate it. |
I will turn My face away from them, and they will defile My treasured place. Violent men will enter it, and they will defile it. | 22I will turn my face away from them and they will desecrate my treasured place. Vandals will enter it and desecrate it. |
Forge the chain, for the land is full of crimes of bloodshed, and the city is full of violence. | 23(Make the chain, because the land is full of murder and the city is full of violence.) |
So I will bring the most wicked of nations to take possession of their houses. I will end the pride of the mighty, and their holy places will be profaned. | 24I will bring the most wicked of the nations and they will take possession of their houses. I will put an end to the arrogance of the strong, and their sanctuaries will be desecrated. |
Anguish is coming! They will seek peace, but find none. | 25Terror is coming! They will seek peace, but find none. |
Disaster upon disaster will come, and rumor after rumor. Then they will seek a vision from a prophet, but instruction from the priests will perish, as will counsel from the elders. | 26Disaster after disaster will come, and one rumor after another. They will seek a vision from a prophet; priestly instruction will disappear, along with counsel from the elders. |
The king will mourn, the prince will be clothed with despair, and the hands of the people of the land will tremble. I will deal with them according to their conduct, and I will judge them by their own standards. Then they will know that I am the LORD.’ ” | 27The king will mourn and the prince will be clothed with shuddering; the hands of the people of the land will tremble. Based on their behavior I will deal with them, and by their standard of justice I will judge them. Then they will know that I am the LORD!" |
