This is a prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, according to Shigionoth:1This is a prayer of Habakkuk the prophet:
O LORD, I have heard the report of You; I stand in awe, O LORD, of Your deeds. Revive them in these years; make them known in these years. In Your wrath, remember mercy!2LORD, I have heard the report of what you did; I am awed, LORD, by what you accomplished. In our time repeat those deeds; in our time reveal them again. But when you cause turmoil, remember to show us mercy!
God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah His glory covered the heavens, and His praise filled the earth.3God comes from Teman, the sovereign one from Mount Paran. Selah. His splendor covers the skies, his glory fills the earth.
His radiance was like the sunlight; rays flashed from His hand, where His power is hidden.4He is as bright as lightning; a two-pronged lightning bolt flashes from his hand. This is the outward display of his power.
Plague went before Him, and fever followed in His steps.5Plague goes before him; pestilence marches right behind him.
He stood and measured the earth; He looked and startled the nations; the ancient mountains crumbled; the perpetual hills collapsed. His ways are everlasting.6He takes his battle position and shakes the earth; with a mere look he frightens the nations. The ancient mountains disintegrate; the primeval hills are flattened. He travels on the ancient roads.
I saw the tents of Cushan in distress; the curtains of Midian were trembling.7I see the tents of Cushan overwhelmed by trouble; the tent curtains of the land of Midian are shaking.
Were You angry at the rivers, O LORD? Was Your wrath against the streams? Did You rage against the sea when You rode on Your horses, on Your chariots of salvation?8Is the LORD mad at the rivers? Are you angry with the rivers? Are you enraged at the sea? Is this why you climb into your horse-drawn chariots, your victorious chariots?
You brandished Your bow; You called for many arrows. Selah You split the earth with rivers.9Your bow is ready for action; you commission your arrows. Selah. You cause flash floods on the earth's surface.
The mountains saw You and quaked; torrents of water swept by. The deep roared with its voice and lifted its hands on high.10When the mountains see you, they shake. The torrential downpour sweeps through. The great deep shouts out; it lifts its hands high.
Sun and moon stood still in their places at the flash of Your flying arrows, at the brightness of Your shining spear.11The sun and moon stand still in their courses; the flash of your arrows drives them away, the bright light of your lightning-quick spear.
You marched across the earth with fury; You threshed the nations in wrath.12You furiously stomp on the earth, you angrily trample down the nations.
You went forth for the salvation of Your people, to save Your anointed. You crushed the head of the house of the wicked and stripped him from head to toe. Selah13You march out to deliver your people, to deliver your special servant. You strike the leader of the wicked nation, laying him open from the lower body to the neck. Selah.
With his own spear You pierced his head, when his warriors stormed out to scatter us, gloating as though ready to secretly devour the weak.14You pierce the heads of his warriors with a spear. They storm forward to scatter us; they shout with joy as if they were plundering the poor with no opposition.
You trampled the sea with Your horses, churning the great waters.15But you trample on the sea with your horses, on the surging, raging waters.
I heard and trembled within; my lips quivered at the sound. Decay entered my bones; I trembled where I stood. Yet I must wait patiently for the day of distress to come upon the people who invade us.16I listened and my stomach churned; the sound made my lips quiver. My frame went limp, as if my bones were decaying, and I shook as I tried to walk. I long for the day of distress to come upon the people who attack us.
Though the fig tree does not bud and no fruit is on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though the sheep are cut off from the fold and no cattle are in the stalls,17When the fig tree does not bud, and there are no grapes on the vines; when the olive trees do not produce, and the fields yield no crops; when the sheep disappear from the pen, and there are no cattle in the stalls,
yet I will exult in the LORD; I will rejoice in the God of my salvation!18I will rejoice because of the LORD; I will be happy because of the God who delivers me!
GOD the Lord is my strength; He makes my feet like those of a deer; He makes me walk upon the heights! For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments.19The sovereign LORD is my source of strength. He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. (This prayer is for the song leader. It is to be accompanied by stringed instruments.)
