Habakkuk's Prayer
14With his own spear You pierced his head, when his warriors stormed out to scatter us, gloating as though ready to secretly devour the weak. 15You trampled the sea with Your horses, churning the great waters. 16I heard and trembled within; my lips quivered at the sound. Decay entered my bones; I trembled where I stood. Yet I must wait patiently for the day of distress to come upon the people who invade us.…

Habakkuk 3
1. Habakkuk, in his prayer, trembles at God's majesty.
17. The confidence of his faith.

You trampled the sea with Your horses
This phrase evokes imagery of divine power and authority over creation, reminiscent of God's control over the natural world as seen in the parting of the Red Sea (Exodus 14:21-22). The "horses" symbolize strength and might, often associated with God's judgment and deliverance. In ancient Near Eastern culture, horses were symbols of war and conquest, suggesting God's ability to subdue chaos and bring order. This imagery can also be seen in Revelation 19:11-16, where Christ is depicted as a rider on a white horse, symbolizing His ultimate victory over evil.

churning the great waters
The "great waters" refer to the chaotic and untamed forces of nature, often symbolizing danger and opposition in biblical literature. This phrase may allude to the primordial chaos subdued by God in creation (Genesis 1:2) and His ongoing sovereignty over the elements. The churning waters can also be seen as a metaphor for the nations and peoples in turmoil, as in Isaiah 17:12-13, where the nations are compared to the roaring of mighty waters. This imagery underscores God's supreme authority over all creation and history, foreshadowing the peace and order brought by Christ's reign.

God as a Warrior
The depiction of God as a warrior reassures believers of His active involvement in the battles they face, providing strength and victory.(15) Thou didst walk.--Better, Thou walkest. "Heap" is probably the correct translation of chomer here, as in Exodus 8:10. With this glance at the miraculous passage of the Red Sea (see Habakkuk 3:8) this prophetic poem comes to a sudden termination. The new paragraph begins with Habakkuk 3:16, not, as is indicated in the Authorised Version, with Habakkuk 3:17.

Verse 15. - The Exodus is the type of the deliverance of God's people. Thou didst walk through (didst tread) the sea with thine horses; literally, thou treadest the sea, thy horses, the horses being explanatory. The prophet takes his imagery from Exodus 15:1-19. He represents God as a warrior in his chariot, leading the way through the waters to the destruction of his enemies and to the salvation of his own people. Through the heap of great waters; or, upon the surge of mighty waters. The verse may also be rendered, Thou treadest the sea - thy horses (tread) the heap of great waters (Psalm 77:19). Past mercies and deliverances are types and pledges of future.
