Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: | 1This letter is from Paul, Silas, and Timothy. We are writing to the church in Thessalonica, to you who belong to God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. |
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. | 2May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. Encouragement during Persecution |
We are obligated to thank God for you all the time, brothers, as is fitting, because your faith is growing more and more, and your love for one another is increasing. | 3Dear brothers and sisters, we can’t help but thank God for you, because your faith is flourishing and your love for one another is growing. |
That is why we boast among God’s churches about your perseverance and faith in the face of all the persecution and affliction you are enduring. | 4We proudly tell God’s other churches about your endurance and faithfulness in all the persecutions and hardships you are suffering. |
All this is clear evidence of God’s righteous judgment. And so you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. | 5And God will use this persecution to show his justice and to make you worthy of his Kingdom, for which you are suffering. |
After all, it is only right for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, | 6In his justice he will pay back those who persecute you. |
and to grant relief to you who are oppressed and to us as well. This will take place when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels | 7And God will provide rest for you who are being persecuted and also for us when the Lord Jesus appears from heaven. He will come with his mighty angels, |
in blazing fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. | 8in flaming fire, bringing judgment on those who don’t know God and on those who refuse to obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus. |
They will suffer the penalty of eternal destruction, separated from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His might, | 9They will be punished with eternal destruction, forever separated from the Lord and from his glorious power. |
on the day He comes to be glorified in His saints and regarded with wonder by all who have believed, including you who have believed our testimony. | 10When he comes on that day, he will receive glory from his holy people—praise from all who believe. And this includes you, for you believed what we told you about him. |
To this end, we always pray for you, that our God will count you worthy of His calling, and that He will powerfully fulfill your every good desire and work of faith, | 11So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do. |
so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. | 12Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be honored because of the way you live, and you will be honored along with him. This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ. |
