The whole earth had the same language and vocabulary.1There was a time when the entire earth spoke a common language with an identical vocabulary.
As people migrated from the east, they found a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there.2As people migrated westward, they came across a plain in the region of Shinar and settled there.
They said to each other, "Come, let us make oven-fired bricks." (They used brick for stone and asphalt for mortar.)3They told each other, "Come on! Let's burn bricks thoroughly." They used bricks for stone and tar for mortar.
And they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky. Let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise, we will be scattered throughout the earth."4Then they said, "Come on! Let's build ourselves a city and a tower, with its summit in the heavens, and let's make a name for ourselves so we won't be scattered over the surface of the whole earth."
Then the LORD came down to look over the city and the tower that the humans were building.5However, the LORD descended to look over the city and the tower that the humans were building.
The LORD said, "If they have begun to do this as one people all having the same language, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.6The LORD said, "Look! They are one people with the same language for all of them, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. Nothing that they have a mind to do will be impossible for them!
Come, let's go down there and confuse their language so that they will not understand one another's speech."7Come on! Let's go down there and confuse their language, so that they won't understand each other's speech."
So from there the LORD scattered them throughout the earth, and they stopped building the city.8So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the surface of the whole earth, so that they had to stop building the city.
Therefore it is called Babylon, for there the LORD confused the language of the whole earth, and from there the LORD scattered them throughout the earth.9Therefore it was called Babylon, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth, and from there the LORD scattered them over the surface of the entire earth.
