1"Now you, son of man, take a brick, set it in front of you, and draw the city of Jerusalem on it.

1"Now, son of man, take a block of clay, put it in front of you and draw the city of Jerusalem on it.

2Then lay siege against it: Construct a siege wall, build a ramp, pitch military camps, and place battering rams against it on all sides.

2Then lay siege to it: Erect siege works against it, build a ramp up to it, set up camps against it and put battering rams around it.

3Take an iron plate and set it up as an iron wall between yourself and the city. Face it so that it is under siege, and besiege it. This will be a sign for the house of Israel.

4"Then lie down on your left side and place the iniquity of the house of Israel on it. You will bear their iniquity for the number of days you lie on your side.

6When you have completed these days, lie down again, but on your right side, and bear the iniquity of the house of Judah. I have assigned you forty days, a day for each year.

7Face the siege of Jerusalem with your arm bared, and prophesy against it.

8Be aware that I will put cords on you so you cannot turn from side to side until you have finished the days of your siege.

10The food you eat each day will weigh eight ounces; you will eat it at set times.

11You will also drink a ration of water, a sixth of a gallon, which you will drink at set times.

12You will eat it as you would a barley cake and bake it over dried human excrement in their sight."

13The LORD said, "This is how the Israelites will eat their bread--ceremonially unclean--among the nations where I will banish them."

13The LORD said, "In this way the people of Israel will eat defiled food among the nations where I will drive them."

14But I said, "Oh, Lord GOD, I have never been defiled. From my youth until now I have not eaten anything that died naturally or was mauled by wild beasts. And impure meat has never entered my mouth."

14Then I said, "Not so, Sovereign LORD! I have never defiled myself. From my youth until now I have never eaten anything found dead or torn by wild animals. No impure meat has ever entered my mouth."

15He replied to me, "Look, I will let you use cow dung instead of human excrement, and you can make your bread over that."

15"Very well," he said, "I will let you bake your bread over cow dung instead of human excrement."

16He said to me, "Son of man, I am going to cut off the supply of bread in Jerusalem. They will anxiously eat food they have weighed out and in dread drink rationed water

16He then said to me: "Son of man, I am about to cut off the food supply in Jerusalem. The people will eat rationed food in anxiety and drink rationed water in despair,

17for lack of bread and water. Everyone will be devastated and waste away because of their iniquity.

17for food and water will be scarce. They will be appalled at the sight of each other and will waste away because of their sin.
