Psalm 39
ESV Parallel BSB [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
English Standard VersionBerean Study Bible
I said, “I will guard my ways, that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle, so long as the wicked are in my presence.”1For the choirmaster. For Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, “I will watch my ways so that I will not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are present.”
I was mute and silent; I held my peace to no avail, and my distress grew worse.2I was speechless and still; I remained silent, even from speaking good, and my sorrow was stirred.
My heart became hot within me. As I mused, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue:3My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue:
“O LORD, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am!4“Show me, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days. Let me know how fleeting my life is.
Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath! Selah5You, indeed, have made my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime as nothing before You. Truly each man at his best exists as but a breath. Selah
Surely a man goes about as a shadow! Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; man heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather!6Surely every man goes about like a phantom; surely he bustles in vain; he heaps up riches not knowing who will haul them away.
“And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you.7And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You.
Deliver me from all my transgressions. Do not make me the scorn of the fool!8Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the reproach of fools.
I am mute; I do not open my mouth, for it is you who have done it.9I have become mute; I do not open my mouth because of what You have done.
Remove your stroke from me; I am spent by the hostility of your hand.10Remove Your scourge from me; I am perishing by the force of Your hand.
When you discipline a man with rebukes for sin, you consume like a moth what is dear to him; surely all mankind is a mere breath! Selah11You discipline and correct a man for his iniquity, consuming like a moth what he holds dear; surely each man is but a vapor. Selah
“Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; hold not your peace at my tears! For I am a sojourner with you, a guest, like all my fathers.12Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my weeping. For I am a foreigner dwelling with You, a stranger like all my fathers.
Look away from me, that I may smile again, before I depart and am no more!”13Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may again be cheered before I depart and am no more.”
