1The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. | 1This saying is trustworthy: "If anyone aspires to be an overseer, he desires a noble work." |
2Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, | 2An overseer, therefore, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, self-controlled, sensible, respectable, hospitable, an able teacher, |
3not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. | 3not addicted to wine, not a bully but gentle, not quarrelsome, not greedy-- |
4He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, | 4one who manages his own household competently, having his children under control with all dignity. |

16Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory. | 16And most certainly, the mystery of godliness is great: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory. |
