| 1when I would heal Israel, the iniquity of Ephraim is revealed, and the evil deeds of Samaria, for they deal falsely; the thief breaks in, and the bandits raid outside. | 1whenever I want to heal Israel, the sin of Ephraim is revealed, and the evil deeds of Samaria are exposed. For they do what is wrong; thieves break into houses, and gangs rob people out in the streets. |
| 2But they do not consider that I remember all their evil. Now their deeds surround them; they are before my face. | 2They do not realize that I remember all of their wicked deeds. Their evil deeds have now surrounded them; their sinful deeds are always before me. |
| 3By their evil they make the king glad, and the princes by their treachery. | 3The royal advisers delight the king with their evil schemes, the princes make him glad with their lies. |
| 4They are all adulterers; they are like a heated oven whose baker ceases to stir the fire, from the kneading of the dough until it is leavened. | 4They are all like bakers, they are like a smoldering oven; they are like a baker who does not stoke the fire until the kneaded dough is ready for baking. |
| 5On the day of our king, the princes became sick with the heat of wine; he stretched out his hand with mockers. | 5At the celebration of their king, his princes become inflamed with wine; they conspire with evildoers. |
| 6For with hearts like an oven they approach their intrigue; all night their anger smolders; in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire. | 6They approach him, all the while plotting against him. | 9Strangers devour his strength, and he knows it not; gray hairs are sprinkled upon him, and he knows it not. | 9Foreigners are consuming what his strenuous labor produced, but he does not recognize it! His head is filled with gray hair, but he does not realize it! |
| 10The pride of Israel testifies to his face; yet they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him, for all this. | 10The arrogance of Israel testifies against him, yet they refuse to return to the LORD their God! In spite of all this they refuse to seek him! |
| 11Ephraim is like a dove, silly and without sense, calling to Egypt, going to Assyria. | 11Ephraim has been like a dove, easily deceived and lacking discernment. They called to Egypt for help; they turned to Assyria for protection. |
| 12As they go, I will spread over them my net; I will bring them down like birds of the heavens; I will discipline them according to the report made to their congregation. | 12I will throw my bird net over them while they are flying, I will bring them down like birds in the sky; I will discipline them when I hear them flocking together. |
| 13Woe to them, for they have strayed from me! Destruction to them, for they have rebelled against me! I would redeem them, but they speak lies against me. | 13Woe to them! | 14They do not cry to me from the heart, but they wail upon their beds; for grain and wine they gash themselves; they rebel against me. | 14They do not pray to me, but howl in distress on their beds; They slash themselves for grain and new wine, but turn away from me. |
| 15Although I trained and strengthened their arms, yet they devise evil against me. | 15Although I trained and strengthened them, they plot evil against me! |
| 16They return, but not upward; they are like a treacherous bow; their princes shall fall by the sword because of the insolence of their tongue. This shall be their derision in the land of Egypt. | 16They turn to Baal; they are like an unreliable bow. Their leaders will fall by the sword because their prayers to Baal have made me angry. So people will disdain them in the land of Egypt. |
