Now the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will depart from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons,1Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,
through the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared. 2through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared,
They forbid marriage and demand abstinence from foods that God created to be received with gratitude by those who believe and know the truth. 3who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
For everything created by God is good, and nothing should be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,4For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,
since it is sanctified by the word of God and by prayer. 5for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.
If you point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished by the words of the faith and the good teaching that you have followed.6If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed.
But have nothing to do with irreverent and silly myths. Rather, train yourself in godliness,7Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness;
for the training of the body has a limited benefit, but godliness is beneficial in every way, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. 8for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance.9The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance.
In fact, we labor and strive for this, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of everyone, especially of those who believe. 10For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.
Command and teach these things.11Command and teach these things.
Let no one despise your youth; instead, you should be an example to the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.12Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
Until I come, give your attention to public reading, exhortation, and teaching. 13Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.
Do not neglect the gift that is in you; it was given to you through prophecy, with the laying on of hands by the council of elders. 14Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you.
Practice these things; be committed to them, so that your progress may be evident to all. 15Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress.
Pay close attention to your life and your teaching; persevere in these things, for by doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers. 16Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.
