Therefore, as a fellow elder and witness to the sufferings of the Messiah and also a participant in the glory about to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you: 1Therefore, as a fellow elder, a witness of the Messiah's sufferings, and one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I appeal to the elders among you:
Shepherd God's flock among you, not overseeing out of compulsion but freely, according to God's will; not for the money but eagerly; 2Be shepherds of God's flock that is among you, watching over it, not because you must but because you want to, and not greedily but eagerly, as God desires.
not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 3Do not lord it over the people entrusted to you, but be examples to the flock.
And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 4Then, when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the victor's crown of glory that will never fade away.
In the same way, you younger men, be subject to the elders. And all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. 5In a similar way, you young people must submit to the elders. All of you must clothe yourselves with humility for the sake of each other, because: "God opposes the arrogant, but gives grace to the humble."
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you at the proper time,6Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that at the proper time he may exalt you.
casting all your care on Him, because He cares about you. 7Throw all your worry on him, because he cares for you.
Be serious! Be alert! Your adversary the Devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour. 8Be clear-minded and alert. Your opponent, the devil, is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.
Resist him and be firm in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are being experienced by your fellow believers throughout the world. 9Resist him and be firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering.
Now the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will personally restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little.10After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you by the Messiah Jesus to his eternal glory, will restore you, establish you, strengthen you, and support you.
The dominion belongs to Him forever. Amen. 11Power belongs to him forever and ever! Amen.
I have written you this brief letter through Silvanus (I know him to be a faithful brother) to encourage you and to testify that this is the true grace of God. Take your stand in it! 12Through Silvanus, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written this short letter to encourage you and to testify that this is to be the true grace of God in which you are to stand firm!
The church in Babylon, also chosen, sends you greetings, as does Mark, my son. 13Your sister church in Babylon, chosen along with you, sends you greetings, as does Mark, whom I regard as a son.
Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. 14Greet one another with a loving kiss. Peace be to all of you who are in the Messiah!
