From: The Elder To: My dear friend Gaius, whom I genuinely love.1The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
Dear friend, I pray that you are doing well in every way and that you are healthy, just as your soul is healthy. 2Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
I was overjoyed when some brothers arrived and testified about your truthfulness and how you live according to the truth. 3For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are living according to the truth.4I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
Dear friend, you are faithful in whatever you do for the brothers, especially when they are strangers. 5Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;
They have testified before the church about your love. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God. 6Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:
After all, they went on their trip for the sake of the Name, accepting no support from gentiles. 7Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.
Therefore, we ought to support such people so that we can become genuine helpers with them.8We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.
I wrote a letter to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be in charge, will not recognize our authority.9I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
For this reason, when I come I will call attention to what he is doing in spreading false charges against us. And not content with that, he refuses to receive the brothers. He even tries to stop those who want to accept them and throws them out of the church.10Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.
Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The person who does what is good is from God. The person who does what is evil has never seen God. 11Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.
Demetrius has received a good report from everyone, including the truth itself. We, too, can testify to this report, and you know that our testimony is true.12Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.
Although I have a great deal to write to you, I would rather not write with pen and ink. 13I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee:
Instead, I hope to see you soon and speak face to face. [15] May peace be with you! Your friends greet you. Greet each of our friends by name.14But I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name.
