To the chief Musician, even to Jeduthun, A Psalm of David. I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.1I said, "I will guard my ways so that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are in my presence."
I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.2I was speechless and quiet; I kept silent, even from speaking good, and my pain intensified.
My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned: then spake I with my tongue,3My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, a fire burned. I spoke with my tongue:
LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am.4"LORD, make me aware of my end and the number of my days so that I will know how short-lived I am.
Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.5In fact, you have made my days just inches long, and my life span is as nothing to you. Yes, every human being stands as only a vapor. Selah
Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.6Yes, a person goes about like a mere shadow. Indeed, they rush around in vain, gathering possessions without knowing who will get them.
And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.7"Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you.
Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish.8Rescue me from all my transgressions; do not make me the taunt of fools.
I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it.9I am speechless; I do not open my mouth because of what you have done.
Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thine hand.10Remove your torment from me. Because of the force of your hand I am finished.
When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah.11You discipline a person with punishment for iniquity, consuming like a moth what is precious to him; yes, every human being is only a vapor. Selah
Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.12"Hear my prayer, LORD, and listen to my cry for help; do not be silent at my tears. For I am here with you as an alien, a temporary resident like all my ancestors.
O spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go hence, and be no more.13Turn your angry gaze from me so that I may be cheered up before I die and am gone."
