King James Bible | English Standard Version |
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; | 1First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, |
For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. | 2for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. |
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; | 3This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, |
Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. | 4who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. |
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; | 5For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, |
Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. | 6who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. |
Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity. | 7For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. |
I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. | 8I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; |
In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; | 9likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, |
But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. | 10but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. |
Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. | 11Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. |
But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. | 12I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. |
For Adam was first formed, then Eve. | 13For Adam was formed first, then Eve; |
And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. | 14and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. |
Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety. | 15Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control. |
