King James Bible | New Living Translation |
A Psalm of David. Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity. | 1Don’t worry about the wicked or envy those who do wrong. |
For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. | 2For like grass, they soon fade away. Like spring flowers, they soon wither. |
Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. | 3Trust in the LORD and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. |
Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. | 4Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires. |
Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. | 5Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you. |
And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday. | 6He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn, and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun. |
Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. | 7Be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes. |
Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. | 8Stop being angry! Turn from your rage! Do not lose your temper— it only leads to harm. |
For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth. | 9For the wicked will be destroyed, but those who trust in the LORD will possess the land. |
For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. | 10Soon the wicked will disappear. Though you look for them, they will be gone. |
But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. | 11The lowly will possess the land and will live in peace and prosperity. |
The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. | 12The wicked plot against the godly; they snarl at them in defiance. |
The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming. | 13But the Lord just laughs, for he sees their day of judgment coming. |
The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation. | 14The wicked draw their swords and string their bows to kill the poor and the oppressed, to slaughter those who do right. |
Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken. | 15But their swords will stab their own hearts, and their bows will be broken. |
A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked. | 16It is better to be godly and have little than to be evil and rich. |
For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the LORD upholdeth the righteous. | 17For the strength of the wicked will be shattered, but the LORD takes care of the godly. |
The LORD knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever. | 18Day by day the LORD takes care of the innocent, and they will receive an inheritance that lasts forever. |
They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied. | 19They will not be disgraced in hard times; even in famine they will have more than enough. |
But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away. | 20But the wicked will die. The LORD’s enemies are like flowers in a field— they will disappear like smoke. |
The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth. | 21The wicked borrow and never repay, but the godly are generous givers. |
For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth; and they that be cursed of him shall be cut off. | 22Those the LORD blesses will possess the land, but those he curses will die. |
The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. | 23The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. |
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand. | 24Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the LORD holds them by the hand. |
I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. | 25Once I was young, and now I am old. Yet I have never seen the godly abandoned or their children begging for bread. |
He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed. | 26The godly always give generous loans to others, and their children are a blessing. |
Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore. | 27Turn from evil and do good, and you will live in the land forever. |
For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off. | 28For the LORD loves justice, and he will never abandon the godly. He will keep them safe forever, but the children of the wicked will die. |
The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever. | 29The godly will possess the land and will live there forever. |
The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment. | 30The godly offer good counsel; they teach right from wrong. |
The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide. | 31They have made God’s law their own, so they will never slip from his path. |
The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him. | 32The wicked wait in ambush for the godly, looking for an excuse to kill them. |
The LORD will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged. | 33But the LORD will not let the wicked succeed or let the godly be condemned when they are put on trial. |
Wait on the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it. | 34Put your hope in the LORD. Travel steadily along his path. He will honor you by giving you the land. You will see the wicked destroyed. |
I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree. | 35I have seen wicked and ruthless people flourishing like a tree in its native soil. |
Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found. | 36But when I looked again, they were gone! Though I searched for them, I could not find them! |
Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. | 37Look at those who are honest and good, for a wonderful future awaits those who love peace. |
But the transgressors shall be destroyed together: the end of the wicked shall be cut off. | 38But the rebellious will be destroyed; they have no future. |
But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble. | 39The LORD rescues the godly; he is their fortress in times of trouble. |
And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him. | 40The LORD helps them, rescuing them from the wicked. He saves them, and they find shelter in him. |
