Paul, a bond-servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of those chosen of God and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness,1Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness,
in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago,2in the hope of eternal life that God, who cannot lie, promised before time began.
but at the proper time manifested, even His word, in the proclamation with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior,3In his own time he has revealed his word in the preaching with which I was entrusted by the command of God our Savior:
To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.4To Titus, my true son in our common faith. Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.
For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you,5The reason I left you in Crete was to set right what was left undone and, as I directed you, to appoint elders in every town.
namely, if any man is above reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of dissipation or rebellion.6An elder must be blameless: the husband of one wife, with faithful children who are not accused of wildness or rebellion.
For the overseer must be above reproach as God's steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain,7As an overseer of God's household, he must be blameless: not arrogant, not hot-tempered, not an excessive drinker, not a bully, not greedy for money,
but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled,8but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, righteous, holy, self-controlled,
holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.9holding to the faithful message as taught, so that he will be able both to encourage with sound teaching and to refute those who contradict it.

who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain.11It is necessary to silence them; they are ruining entire households by teaching what they shouldn't in order to get money dishonestly.
One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons."12One of their very own prophets said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons."
This testimony is true. For this reason reprove them severely so that they may be sound in the faith,13This testimony is true. For this reason, rebuke them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith
not paying attention to Jewish myths and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.14and may not pay attention to Jewish myths and the commands of people who reject the truth.
To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.15To the pure, everything is pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; in fact, both their mind and conscience are defiled.
They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.16They claim to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.
