First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, | 1First of all, then, I urge that requests, prayers, intercessions, and thanks be offered on behalf of all people, |
for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. | 2even for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. |
This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, | 3Such prayer for all is good and welcomed before God our Savior, |
who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. | 4since he wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. |
For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, | 5For there is one God and one intermediary between God and humanity, Christ Jesus, himself human, |
who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time. | 6who gave himself as a ransom for all, revealing God's purpose at his appointed time. |
For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying) as a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. | 7For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle--I am telling the truth; I am not lying--and a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. |
Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension. | 8So I want the men to pray in every place, lifting up holy hands without anger or dispute. |
Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, | 9Likewise the women are to dress in suitable apparel, with modesty and self-control. Their adornment must not be with braided hair and gold or pearls or expensive clothing, |
but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness. | 10but with good deeds, as is proper for women who profess reverence for God. |
A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. | 11A woman must learn quietly with all submissiveness. |
But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. | 12But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man. She must remain quiet. |
For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. | 13For Adam was formed first and then Eve. |
And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. | 14And Adam was not deceived, but the woman, because she was fully deceived, fell into transgression. |
But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint. | 15But she will be delivered through childbearing, if she continues in faith and love and holiness with self-control. |
