| 1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered, | 1Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied: |
| 2"If one ventures a word with you, will you become impatient? But who can refrain from speaking? | 2"If someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? But who can keep from speaking? |
| 3"Behold you have admonished many, And you have strengthened weak hands. | 3Think how you have instructed many, how you have strengthened feeble hands. |
| 4"Your words have helped the tottering to stand, And you have strengthened feeble knees. | 4Your words have supported those who stumbled; you have strengthened faltering knees. |
| 5"But now it has come to you, and you are impatient; It touches you, and you are dismayed. | 5But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged; it strikes you, and you are dismayed. |
| 6"Is not your fear of God your confidence, And the integrity of your ways your hope? | 6Should not your piety be your confidence and your blameless ways your hope? |
| 7"Remember now, who ever perished being innocent? Or where were the upright destroyed? | 7"Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Where were the upright ever destroyed? |
| 8"According to what I have seen, those who plow iniquity And those who sow trouble harvest it. | 8As I have observed, those who plow evil and those who sow trouble reap it. |
| 9"By the breath of God they perish, And by the blast of His anger they come to an end. | 9At the breath of God they perish; at the blast of his anger they are no more. |
| 10"The roaring of the lion and the voice of the fierce lion, And the teeth of the young lions are broken. | 10The lions may roar and growl, yet the teeth of the great lions are broken. |
| 11"The lion perishes for lack of prey, And the whelps of the lioness are scattered. | 11The lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered. |
| 12"Now a word was brought to me stealthily, And my ear received a whisper of it. | 12"A word was secretly brought to me, my ears caught a whisper of it. |
| 13"Amid disquieting thoughts from the visions of the night, When deep sleep falls on men, | 13Amid disquieting dreams in the night, when deep sleep falls on people, |
| 14Dread came upon me, and trembling, And made all my bones shake. | 14fear and trembling seized me and made all my bones shake. |
| 15"Then a spirit passed by my face; The hair of my flesh bristled up. | 15A spirit glided past my face, and the hair on my body stood on end. |
| 16"It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance; A form was before my eyes; There was silence, then I heard a voice: | 16It stopped, but I could not tell what it was. A form stood before my eyes, and I heard a hushed voice: |
| 17'Can mankind be just before God? Can a man be pure before his Maker? | 17Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can even a strong man be more pure than his Maker? |
| 18'He puts no trust even in His servants; And against His angels He charges error. | 18If God places no trust in his servants, if he charges his angels with error, |
| 19'How much more those who dwell in houses of clay, Whose foundation is in the dust, Who are crushed before the moth! | 19how much more those who live in houses of clay, whose foundations are in the dust, who are crushed more readily than a moth! |
| 20'Between morning and evening they are broken in pieces; Unobserved, they perish forever. | 20Between dawn and dusk they are broken to pieces; unnoticed, they perish forever. |
| 21'Is not their tent-cord plucked up within them? They die, yet without wisdom.' | 21Are not the cords of their tent pulled up, so that they die without wisdom?' |
