New American Standard Bible 1995 | New International Version |
Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish, | 1From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God. |
and he said, "I called out of my distress to the LORD, And He answered me. I cried for help from the depth of Sheol; You heard my voice. | 2He said: "In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry. |
"For You had cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the current engulfed me. All Your breakers and billows passed over me. | 3You hurled me into the depths, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me. |
"So I said, 'I have been expelled from Your sight. Nevertheless I will look again toward Your holy temple.' | 4I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.' |
"Water encompassed me to the point of death. The great deep engulfed me, Weeds were wrapped around my head. | 5The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. |
"I descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever, But You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God. | 6To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, LORD my God, brought my life up from the pit. |
"While I was fainting away, I remembered the LORD, And my prayer came to You, Into Your holy temple. | 7"When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple. |
"Those who regard vain idols Forsake their faithfulness, | 8"Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God's love for them. |
But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is from the LORD." | 9But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, 'Salvation comes from the LORD.'" |
Then the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land. | 10And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. |
