The oracle of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.1A prophecy concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
A jealous and avenging God is the LORD; The LORD is avenging and wrathful. The LORD takes vengeance on His adversaries, And He reserves wrath for His enemies.2The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD takes vengeance and is filled with wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his foes and vents his wrath against his enemies.
The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, And the LORD will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. In whirlwind and storm is His way, And clouds are the dust beneath His feet.3The LORD is slow to anger but great in power; the LORD will not leave the guilty unpunished. His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are the dust of his feet.
He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; He dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel wither; The blossoms of Lebanon wither.4He rebukes the sea and dries it up; he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither and the blossoms of Lebanon fade.
Mountains quake because of Him And the hills dissolve; Indeed the earth is upheaved by His presence, The world and all the inhabitants in it.5The mountains quake before him and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at his presence, the world and all who live in it.
Who can stand before His indignation? Who can endure the burning of His anger? His wrath is poured out like fire And the rocks are broken up by Him.6Who can withstand his indignation? Who can endure his fierce anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; the rocks are shattered before him.
The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble, And He knows those who take refuge in Him.7The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him,
But with an overflowing flood He will make a complete end of its site, And will pursue His enemies into darkness.8but with an overwhelming flood he will make an end of Nineveh; he will pursue his foes into the realm of darkness.
Whatever you devise against the LORD, He will make a complete end of it. Distress will not rise up twice.9Whatever they plot against the LORD he will bring to an end; trouble will not come a second time.
Like tangled thorns, And like those who are drunken with their drink, They are consumed As stubble completely withered.10They will be entangled among thorns and drunk from their wine; they will be consumed like dry stubble.
From you has gone forth One who plotted evil against the LORD, A wicked counselor.11From you, Nineveh, has one come forth who plots evil against the LORD and devises wicked plans.
Thus says the LORD, "Though they are at full strength and likewise many, Even so, they will be cut off and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no longer.12This is what the LORD says: "Although they have allies and are numerous, they will be destroyed and pass away. Although I have afflicted you, Judah, I will afflict you no more.
"So now, I will break his yoke bar from upon you, And I will tear off your shackles."13Now I will break their yoke from your neck and tear your shackles away."
The LORD has issued a command concerning you: "Your name will no longer be perpetuated. I will cut off idol and image From the house of your gods. I will prepare your grave, For you are contemptible."14The LORD has given a command concerning you, Nineveh: "You will have no descendants to bear your name. I will destroy the images and idols that are in the temple of your gods. I will prepare your grave, for you are vile."
Behold, on the mountains the feet of him who brings good news, Who announces peace! Celebrate your feasts, O Judah; Pay your vows. For never again will the wicked one pass through you; He is cut off completely.15Look, there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your festivals, Judah, and fulfill your vows. No more will the wicked invade you; they will be completely destroyed.
