New American Standard Bible 1995 | New Living Translation |
Then Job responded, | 1Then Job spoke again: |
"What a help you are to the weak! How you have saved the arm without strength! | 2“How you have helped the powerless! How you have saved the weak! |
"What counsel you have given to one without wisdom! What helpful insight you have abundantly provided! | 3How you have enlightened my stupidity! What wise advice you have offered! |
"To whom have you uttered words? And whose spirit was expressed through you? | 4Where have you gotten all these wise sayings? Whose spirit speaks through you? |
"The departed spirits tremble Under the waters and their inhabitants. | 5“The dead tremble— those who live beneath the waters. |
"Naked is Sheol before Him, And Abaddon has no covering. | 6The underworld is naked in God’s presence. The place of destruction is uncovered. |
"He stretches out the north over empty space And hangs the earth on nothing. | 7God stretches the northern sky over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing. |
"He wraps up the waters in His clouds, And the cloud does not burst under them. | 8He wraps the rain in his thick clouds, and the clouds don’t burst with the weight. |
"He obscures the face of the full moon And spreads His cloud over it. | 9He covers the face of the moon, shrouding it with his clouds. |
"He has inscribed a circle on the surface of the waters At the boundary of light and darkness. | 10He created the horizon when he separated the waters; he set the boundary between day and night. |
"The pillars of heaven tremble And are amazed at His rebuke. | 11The foundations of heaven tremble; they shudder at his rebuke. |
"He quieted the sea with His power, And by His understanding He shattered Rahab. | 12By his power the sea grew calm. By his skill he crushed the great sea monster. |
"By His breath the heavens are cleared; His hand has pierced the fleeing serpent. | 13His Spirit made the heavens beautiful, and his power pierced the gliding serpent. |
"Behold, these are the fringes of His ways; And how faint a word we hear of Him! But His mighty thunder, who can understand?" | 14These are just the beginning of all that he does, merely a whisper of his power. Who, then, can comprehend the thunder of his power?” |
