The oracle against Nineveh; the book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite: 1The pronouncement concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
The LORD is a zealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and very angry. The LORD takes vengeance against his foes; he sustains his rage against his enemies. 2The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD takes vengeance and is fierce in wrath. The LORD takes vengeance against his foes; he is furious with his enemies.
The LORD is slow to anger but great in power; the LORD will certainly not allow the wicked to go unpunished. The Divine Warrior Destroys His Enemies but Protects His People He marches out in the whirlwind and the raging storm; dark storm clouds billow like dust under his feet. 3The LORD is slow to anger but great in power; the LORD will never leave the guilty unpunished. His path is in the whirlwind and storm, and clouds are the dust beneath his feet.
He shouts a battle cry against the sea and makes it dry up; he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither; the blossom of Lebanon withers. 4He rebukes the sea and dries it up, and he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither; even the flower of Lebanon withers.
The mountains tremble before him, the hills convulse; the earth is laid waste before him, the world and all its inhabitants are laid waste. 5The mountains quake before him, and the hills melt; the earth trembles at his presence--the world and all who live in it.
No one can withstand his indignation! No one can resist his fierce anger! His wrath is poured out like volcanic fire, boulders are broken up as he approaches. 6Who can withstand his indignation? Who can endure his burning anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; even rocks are shattered before him.
The LORD is good--indeed, he is a fortress in time of distress, and he protects those who seek refuge in him. 7The LORD is good, a stronghold in a day of distress; he cares for those who take refuge in him.
But with an overwhelming flood he will make a complete end of Nineveh; he will drive his enemies into darkness. 8But he will completely destroy Nineveh with an overwhelming flood, and he will chase his enemies into darkness.
Whatever you plot against the LORD, he will completely destroy! Distress will not arise a second time. 9Whatever you plot against the LORD, he will bring it to complete destruction; oppression will not rise up a second time.
Surely they will be totally consumed like entangled thorn bushes, like the drink of drunkards, like very dry stubble. 10For they will be consumed like entangled thorns, like the drink of a drunkard and like straw that is fully dry.
From you, O Nineveh, one has marched forth who plots evil against the LORD, a wicked military strategist. 11One has gone out from you, who plots evil against the LORD, and is a wicked counselor.
This is what the LORD says: "Even though they are powerful--and what is more, even though their army is numerous--nevertheless, they will be destroyed and trickle away! Although I afflicted you, I will afflict you no more. 12This is what the LORD says: Though they are strong and numerous, they will still be mowed down, and he will pass away. Though I have punished you, I will punish you no longer.
And now, I will break Assyria's yoke bar from your neck; I will tear apart the shackles that are on you." 13For I will now break off his yoke from you and tear off your shackles.
The LORD has issued a decree against you: "Your dynasty will come to an end. I will destroy the idols and images in the temples of your gods. I will desecrate your grave--because you are accursed!" 14The LORD has issued an order concerning you: There will be no offspring to carry on your name. I will eliminate the carved idol and cast image from the house of your gods; I will prepare your grave, for you are contemptible.
Look! A herald is running on the mountains! A messenger is proclaiming deliverance: "Celebrate your sacred festivals, O Judah! Fulfill your sacred vows to praise God! For never again will the wicked Assyrians invade you, they have been completely destroyed." 15Look to the mountains--the feet of the herald, who proclaims peace. Celebrate your festivals, Judah; fulfill your vows. For the wicked one will never again march through you; he will be entirely wiped out.
