A psalm of David, written when he was in the Judean wilderness. O God, you are my God! I long for you! My soul thirsts for you, my flesh yearns for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. | 1A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah. You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. |
Yes, in the sanctuary I have seen you, and witnessed your power and splendor. | 2I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. |
Because experiencing your loyal love is better than life itself, my lips will praise you. | 3Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. |
For this reason I will praise you while I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. | 4I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. |
As if with choice meat you satisfy my soul. My mouth joyfully praises you, | 5I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you. |
whenever I remember you on my bed, and think about you during the nighttime hours. | 6On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. |
For you are my deliverer; under your wings I rejoice. | 7Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. |
My soul pursues you; your right hand upholds me. | 8I cling to you; your right hand upholds me. |
Enemies seek to destroy my life, but they will descend into the depths of the earth. | 9Those who want to kill me will be destroyed; they will go down to the depths of the earth. |
Each one will be handed over to the sword; their corpses will be eaten by jackals. | 10They will be given over to the sword and become food for jackals. |
But the king will rejoice in God; everyone who takes oaths in his name will boast, for the mouths of those who speak lies will be shut up. | 11But the king will rejoice in God; all who swear by God will glory in him, while the mouths of liars will be silenced. |
