But as for you, communicate the behavior that goes with sound teaching. | 1You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. |
Older men are to be temperate, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in endurance. | 2Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance. |
Older women likewise are to exhibit behavior fitting for those who are holy, not slandering, not slaves to excessive drinking, but teaching what is good. | 3Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. |
In this way they will train the younger women to love their husbands, to love their children, | 4Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, |
to be self-controlled, pure, fulfilling their duties at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the message of God may not be discredited. | 5to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. |
Encourage younger men likewise to be self-controlled, | 6Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. |
showing yourself to be an example of good works in every way. In your teaching show integrity, dignity, | 7In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness |
and a sound message that cannot be criticized, so that any opponent will be at a loss, because he has nothing evil to say about us. | 8and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us. |
Slaves are to be subject to their own masters in everything, to do what is wanted and not talk back, | 9Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, |
not pilfering, but showing all good faith, in order to bring credit to the teaching of God our Savior in everything. | 10and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive. |
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people. | 11For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. |
It trains us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, | 12It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, |
as we wait for the happy fulfillment of our hope in the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. | 13while we wait for the blessed hope--the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, |
He gave himself for us to set us free from every kind of lawlessness and to purify for himself a people who are truly his, who are eager to do good. | 14who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. |
So communicate these things with the sort of exhortation or rebuke that carries full authority. Don't let anyone look down on you. | 15These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you. |
