This is a prayer of Habakkuk the prophet: | 1This prayer was sung by the prophet Habakkuk : |
LORD, I have heard the report of what you did; I am awed, LORD, by what you accomplished. In our time repeat those deeds; in our time reveal them again. But when you cause turmoil, remember to show us mercy! | 2I have heard all about you, LORD. I am filled with awe by your amazing works. In this time of our deep need, help us again as you did in years gone by. And in your anger, remember your mercy. |
God comes from Teman, the sovereign one from Mount Paran. Selah. His splendor covers the skies, his glory fills the earth. | 3I see God moving across the deserts from Edom, the Holy One coming from Mount Paran. His brilliant splendor fills the heavens, and the earth is filled with his praise. |
He is as bright as lightning; a two-pronged lightning bolt flashes from his hand. This is the outward display of his power. | 4His coming is as brilliant as the sunrise. Rays of light flash from his hands, where his awesome power is hidden. |
Plague goes before him; pestilence marches right behind him. | 5Pestilence marches before him; plague follows close behind. |
He takes his battle position and shakes the earth; with a mere look he frightens the nations. The ancient mountains disintegrate; the primeval hills are flattened. He travels on the ancient roads. | 6When he stops, the earth shakes. When he looks, the nations tremble. He shatters the everlasting mountains and levels the eternal hills. He is the Eternal One! |
I see the tents of Cushan overwhelmed by trouble; the tent curtains of the land of Midian are shaking. | 7I see the people of Cushan in distress, and the nation of Midian trembling in terror. |
Is the LORD mad at the rivers? Are you angry with the rivers? Are you enraged at the sea? Is this why you climb into your horse-drawn chariots, your victorious chariots? | 8Was it in anger, LORD, that you struck the rivers and parted the sea? Were you displeased with them? No, you were sending your chariots of salvation! |
Your bow is ready for action; you commission your arrows. Selah. You cause flash floods on the earth's surface. | 9You brandished your bow and your quiver of arrows. You split open the earth with flowing rivers. |
When the mountains see you, they shake. The torrential downpour sweeps through. The great deep shouts out; it lifts its hands high. | 10The mountains watched and trembled. Onward swept the raging waters. The mighty deep cried out, lifting its hands in submission. |
The sun and moon stand still in their courses; the flash of your arrows drives them away, the bright light of your lightning-quick spear. | 11The sun and moon stood still in the sky as your brilliant arrows flew and your glittering spear flashed. |
You furiously stomp on the earth, you angrily trample down the nations. | 12You marched across the land in anger and trampled the nations in your fury. |
You march out to deliver your people, to deliver your special servant. You strike the leader of the wicked nation, laying him open from the lower body to the neck. Selah. | 13You went out to rescue your chosen people, to save your anointed ones. You crushed the heads of the wicked and stripped their bones from head to toe. |
You pierce the heads of his warriors with a spear. They storm forward to scatter us; they shout with joy as if they were plundering the poor with no opposition. | 14With his own weapons, you destroyed the chief of those who rushed out like a whirlwind, thinking Israel would be easy prey. |
But you trample on the sea with your horses, on the surging, raging waters. | 15You trampled the sea with your horses, and the mighty waters piled high. |
I listened and my stomach churned; the sound made my lips quiver. My frame went limp, as if my bones were decaying, and I shook as I tried to walk. I long for the day of distress to come upon the people who attack us. | 16I trembled inside when I heard this; my lips quivered with fear. My legs gave way beneath me, and I shook in terror. I will wait quietly for the coming day when disaster will strike the people who invade us. |
When the fig tree does not bud, and there are no grapes on the vines; when the olive trees do not produce, and the fields yield no crops; when the sheep disappear from the pen, and there are no cattle in the stalls, | 17Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, |
I will rejoice because of the LORD; I will be happy because of the God who delivers me! | 18yet I will rejoice in the LORD! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation! |
The sovereign LORD is my source of strength. He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. (This prayer is for the song leader. It is to be accompanied by stringed instruments.) | 19The Sovereign LORD is my strength! He makes me as surefooted as a deer, able to tread upon the heights. (For the choir director: This prayer is to be accompanied by stringed instruments.) |
