| 1By David. To you, O LORD, I cry out! My protector, do not ignore me! If you do not respond to me, I will join those who are descending into the grave. | 1I pray to you, O LORD, my rock. Do not turn a deaf ear to me. For if you are silent, I might as well give up and die. |
| 2Hear my plea for mercy when I cry out to you for help, when I lift my hands toward your holy temple! | 2Listen to my prayer for mercy as I cry out to you for help, as I lift my hands toward your holy sanctuary. |
| 3Do not drag me away with evil men, with those who behave wickedly, who talk so friendly to their neighbors, while they plan to harm them! | 3Do not drag me away with the wicked— with those who do evil— those who speak friendly words to their neighbors while planning evil in their hearts. |
| 4Pay them back for their evil deeds! Pay them back for what they do! Punish them! | 4Give them the punishment they so richly deserve! Measure it out in proportion to their wickedness. Pay them back for all their evil deeds! Give them a taste of what they have done to others. |
| 5For they do not understand the LORD's actions, or the way he carries out justice. The LORD will permanently demolish them. | 5They care nothing for what the LORD has done or for what his hands have made. So he will tear them down, and they will never be rebuilt! |
| 6The LORD deserves praise, for he has heard my plea for mercy! | 6Praise the LORD! For he has heard my cry for mercy. |
| 7The LORD strengthens and protects me; I trust in him with all my heart. I am rescued and my heart is full of joy; I will sing to him in gratitude. | 7The LORD is my strength and shield. | 9Deliver your people! Empower the nation that belongs to you! Care for them like a shepherd and carry them in your arms at all times! | 9Save your people! Bless Israel, your special possession. Lead them like a shepherd, and carry them in your arms forever. |
