For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David. I said, "I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth while in the presence of the wicked." | 1For the choirmaster. For Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, “I will watch my ways so that I will not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are present.” |
So I remained utterly silent, not even saying anything good. But my anguish increased; | 2I was speechless and still; I remained silent, even from speaking good, and my sorrow was stirred. |
my heart grew hot within me. While I meditated, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue: | 3My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue: |
"Show me, LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is. | 4“Show me, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days. Let me know how fleeting my life is. |
You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure. | 5You, indeed, have made my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime as nothing before You. Truly each man at his best exists as but a breath. Selah |
"Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom; in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth without knowing whose it will finally be. | 6Surely every man goes about like a phantom; surely he bustles in vain; he heaps up riches not knowing who will haul them away. |
"But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you. | 7And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You. |
Save me from all my transgressions; do not make me the scorn of fools. | 8Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the reproach of fools. |
I was silent; I would not open my mouth, for you are the one who has done this. | 9I have become mute; I do not open my mouth because of what You have done. |
Remove your scourge from me; I am overcome by the blow of your hand. | 10Remove Your scourge from me; I am perishing by the force of Your hand. |
When you rebuke and discipline anyone for their sin, you consume their wealth like a moth-- surely everyone is but a breath. | 11You discipline and correct a man for his iniquity, consuming like a moth what he holds dear; surely each man is but a vapor. Selah |
"Hear my prayer, LORD, listen to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my weeping. I dwell with you as a foreigner, a stranger, as all my ancestors were. | 12Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my weeping. For I am a foreigner dwelling with You, a stranger like all my fathers. |
Look away from me, that I may enjoy life again before I depart and am no more." | 13Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may again be cheered before I depart and am no more.” |
