New International Version | Berean Study Bible |
You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. | 1But as for you, speak the things that are consistent with sound doctrine. |
Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance. | 2Older men are to be temperate, dignified, self-controlled, and sound in faith, love, and perseverance. |
Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. | 3Older women, likewise, are to be reverent in their behavior, not slanderers or addicted to much wine, but teachers of good. |
Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, | 4In this way they can train the young women to love their husbands and children, |
to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. | 5to be self-controlled, pure, managers of their households, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be discredited. |
Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. | 6In the same way, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. |
In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness | 7In everything, show yourself to be an example by doing good works. In your teaching show integrity, dignity, |
and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us. | 8and wholesome speech that is above reproach, so that anyone who opposes us will be ashamed to have nothing bad to say about us. |
Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, | 9Slaves are to submit to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, |
and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive. | 10not stealing from them, but showing all good faith, so that in every respect they will adorn the teaching about God our Savior. |
For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. | 11For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to everyone. |
It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, | 12It instructs us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live sensible, upright, and godly lives in the present age, |
while we wait for the blessed hope--the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, | 13as we await the blessed hope and glorious appearance of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. |
who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. | 14He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. |
These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you. | 15Speak these things as you encourage and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you. |
