1Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. | 1Jesus summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every kind of disease and every kind of sickness. |
2These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; | 2Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; |
3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; | 3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; |
4Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. | 4Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed Him. |
5These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: "Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. | 5These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them: "Do not go in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans; |
6Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. | 6but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. |
7As you go, proclaim this message: 'The kingdom of heaven has come near.' | 7"And as you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' |
8Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give. | 8"Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give. |
9"Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts-- | 9"Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts, |
10no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep. | 10or a bag for your journey, or even two coats, or sandals, or a staff; for the worker is worthy of his support. |
11Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. | 11"And whatever city or village you enter, inquire who is worthy in it, and stay at his house until you leave that city. |
12As you enter the home, give it your greeting. | 12"As you enter the house, give it your greeting. |
13If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. | 13"If the house is worthy, give it your blessing of peace. But if it is not worthy, take back your blessing of peace. |
14If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet. | 14"Whoever does not receive you, nor heed your words, as you go out of that house or that city, shake the dust off your feet. |
15Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. | 15"Truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city. |
16"I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. | 16"Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves. |
17Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues. | 17"But beware of men, for they will hand you over to the courts and scourge you in their synagogues; |
18On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. | 18and you will even be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. |
19But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, | 19"But when they hand you over, do not worry about how or what you are to say; for it will be given you in that hour what you are to say. |
20for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. | 20"For it is not you who speak, but it is the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you. |
21"Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. | 21"Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. |
22You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. | 22"You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved. |
23When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. | 23"But whenever they persecute you in one city, flee to the next; for truly I say to you, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes. |
24"The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master. | 24"A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master. |
25It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household! | 25"It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the head of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign the members of his household! |
26"So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. | 26"Therefore do not fear them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. |
27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. | 27"What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim upon the housetops. |
28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. | 28"Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. |
29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care. | 29"Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. |
30And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. | 30"But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. |
31So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. | 31"So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows. |
32"Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. | 32"Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. |
33But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven. | 33"But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven. |
34"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. | 34"Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. |
35For I have come to turn "'a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law-- | 35"For I came to SET A MAN AGAINST HIS FATHER, AND A DAUGHTER AGAINST HER MOTHER, AND A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AGAINST HER MOTHER-IN-LAW; |
36a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.' | 36and A MAN'S ENEMIES WILL BE THE MEMBERS OF HIS HOUSEHOLD. |
37"Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. | 37"He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. |
38Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. | 38"And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. |
39Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it. | 39"He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it. |
40"Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. | 40"He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. |
41Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. | 41"He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward. |
42And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward." | 42"And whoever in the name of a disciple gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water to drink, truly I say to you, he shall not lose his reward." |
