Now the whole earth had one language and one speech.1Now the whole world had one language and a common form of speech.
And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there.2And as people journeyed eastward, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar.3And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” So they used brick instead of stone, and tar instead of mortar.
And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”4“Come,” they said, “let us build for ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens, that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of all the earth.”
But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.5Then the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men were building.
And the LORD said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.6And the LORD said, “If they have begun to do this as one people speaking the same language, then nothing they devise will be beyond them.
Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”7Come, let Us go down and confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”
So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city.8So the LORD scattered them from there over the face of all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.9That is why it is called Babel, for there the LORD confused the language of the whole world, and from that place the LORD scattered them over the face of all the earth.
This is the genealogy of Shem: Shem was one hundred years old, and begot Arphaxad two years after the flood.10This is the account of Shem. Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father of Arphaxad.
After he begot Arphaxad, Shem lived five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.11And after he had become the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters.
Arphaxad lived thirty-five years, and begot Salah.12When Arphaxad was 35 years old, he became the father of Shelah.
After he begot Salah, Arphaxad lived four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.13And after he had become the father of Shelah, Arphaxad lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
Salah lived thirty years, and begot Eber.14When Shelah was 30 years old, he became the father of Eber.
After he begot Eber, Salah lived four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.15And after he had become the father of Eber, Shelah lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
Eber lived thirty-four years, and begot Peleg.16When Eber was 34 years old, he became the father of Peleg.
After he begot Peleg, Eber lived four hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters.17And after he had become the father of Peleg, Eber lived 430 years and had other sons and daughters.
Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu.18When Peleg was 30 years old, he became the father of Reu.
After he begot Reu, Peleg lived two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters.19And after he had become the father of Reu, Peleg lived 209 years and had other sons and daughters.
Reu lived thirty-two years, and begot Serug.20When Reu was 32 years old, he became the father of Serug.
After he begot Serug, Reu lived two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters.21And after he had become the father of Serug, Reu lived 207 years and had other sons and daughters.
Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor.22When Serug was 30 years old, he became the father of Nahor.
After he begot Nahor, Serug lived two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.23And after he had become the father of Nahor, Serug lived 200 years and had other sons and daughters.
Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and begot Terah.24When Nahor was 29 years old, he became the father of Terah.
After he begot Terah, Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters.25And after he had become the father of Terah, Nahor lived 119 years and had other sons and daughters.
Now Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.26When Terah was 70 years old, he became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
This is the genealogy of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran begot Lot.27This is the account of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot.
And Haran died before his father Terah in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans.28During his father Terah’s lifetime, Haran died in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
Then Abram and Nahor took wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah.29And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. Abram’s wife was named Sarai, and Nahor’s wife was named Milcah; she was the daughter of Haran, who was the father of both Milcah and Iscah.
But Sarai was barren; she had no child.30But Sarai was barren; she had no children.
And Terah took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram’s wife, and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran and dwelt there.31And Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai the wife of Abram, and they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans for the land of Canaan. But when they arrived in Haran, they settled there.
So the days of Terah were two hundred and five years, and Terah died in Haran.32Terah lived 205 years, and he died in Haran.
