1So Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. | 1So Israel set out with all that he had, and when he came to Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. |
2Then God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said, “Jacob, Jacob!” And he said, “Here I am.” | 2And that night God spoke to Israel in a vision: “Jacob, Jacob!” He said. “Here I am,” replied Jacob. |
3So He said, “I am God, the God of your father; do not fear to go down to Egypt, for I will make of you a great nation there. | 3“I am God,” He said, “the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there. |
4I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also surely bring you up again; and Joseph will put his hand on your eyes.” | 4I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will surely bring you back. And Joseph’s own hands will close your eyes.” |
5Then Jacob arose from Beersheba; and the sons of Israel carried their father Jacob, their little ones, and their wives, in the carts which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. | 5Then Jacob departed from Beersheba, and the sons of Israel took their father Jacob in the wagons Pharaoh had sent to carry him, along with their children and wives. |
6So they took their livestock and their goods, which they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and went to Egypt, Jacob and all his descendants with him. | 6They also took the livestock and possessions they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt. |

31Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and tell Pharaoh, and say to him, ‘My brothers and those of my father’s house, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me. | 31Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and inform Pharaoh: ‘My brothers and my father’s household from the land of Canaan have come to me. |
32And the men are shepherds, for their occupation has been to feed livestock; and they have brought their flocks, their herds, and all that they have.’ | 32The men are shepherds; they raise livestock, and they have brought their flocks and herds and all that they own.’ |
33So it shall be, when Pharaoh calls you and says, ‘What is your occupation?’ | 33When Pharaoh summons you and asks, ‘What is your occupation?’ |
34that you shall say, ‘Your servants’ occupation has been with livestock from our youth even till now, both we and also our fathers,’ that you may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians.” | 34you are to say, ‘Your servants have raised livestock ever since our youth—both we and our fathers.’ Then you will be allowed to settle in the land of Goshen, since all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.” |
