Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.1Therefore, since the promise to enter his rest remains, let us beware that none of you be found to have fallen short.
For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.2For we also have received the good news just as they did. But the message they heard did not benefit them, since they were not united with those who heard it in faith.
For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said: “So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest,’ ” although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.3For we who have believed enter the rest, in keeping with what he has said, So I swore in my anger, "They will not enter my rest," even though his works have been finished since the foundation of the world.
For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”;4For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in this way: And on the seventh day God rested from all his works.
and again in this place: “They shall not enter My rest.”5Again, in that passage he says, They will never enter my rest.
Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience,6Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news did not enter because of disobedience,
again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said: “Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts.”7he again specifies a certain day-- today. He specified this speaking through David after such a long time: Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.
For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day.8For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.
There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.9Therefore, a Sabbath rest remains for God's people.
For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.10For the person who has entered his rest has rested from his own works, just as God did from his.
Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.11Let us then make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall into the same pattern of disobedience.
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.12For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.13No creature is hidden from him, but all things are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.
Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens--Jesus the Son of God--let us hold fast to our confession.
For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin.
Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.16Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.
