New King James Version | NET Bible |
“Hear this, O house of Jacob, Who are called by the name of Israel, And have come forth from the wellsprings of Judah; Who swear by the name of the LORD, And make mention of the God of Israel, But not in truth or in righteousness; | 1Listen to this, O family of Jacob, you who are called by the name 'Israel,' and are descended from Judah, who take oaths in the name of the LORD, and invoke the God of Israel--but not in an honest and just manner. |
For they call themselves after the holy city, And lean on the God of Israel; The LORD of hosts is His name: | 2Indeed, they live in the holy city; they trust in the God of Israel, whose name is the LORD who commands armies. |
“I have declared the former things from the beginning; They went forth from My mouth, and I caused them to hear it. Suddenly I did them, and they came to pass. | 3"I announced events beforehand, I issued the decrees and made the predictions; suddenly I acted and they came to pass. |
Because I knew that you were obstinate, And your neck was an iron sinew, And your brow bronze, | 4I did this because I know how stubborn you are. Your neck muscles are like iron and your forehead like bronze. |
Even from the beginning I have declared it to you; Before it came to pass I proclaimed it to you, Lest you should say, ‘My idol has done them, And my carved image and my molded image Have commanded them.’ | 5I announced them to you beforehand; before they happened, I predicted them for you, so you could never say, 'My image did these things, my idol, my cast image, decreed them.' |
“You have heard; See all this. And will you not declare it? I have made you hear new things from this time, Even hidden things, and you did not know them. | 6You have heard; now look at all the evidence! Will you not admit that what I say is true? From this point on I am announcing to you new events that are previously unrevealed and you do not know about. |
They are created now and not from the beginning; And before this day you have not heard them, Lest you should say, ‘Of course I knew them.’ | 7Now they come into being, not in the past; before today you did not hear about them, so you could not say, 'Yes, I know about them.' |
Surely you did not hear, Surely you did not know; Surely from long ago your ear was not opened. For I knew that you would deal very treacherously, And were called a transgressor from the womb. | 8You did not hear, you do not know, you were not told beforehand. For I know that you are very deceitful; you were labeled a rebel from birth. |
“For My name’s sake I will defer My anger, And for My praise I will restrain it from you, So that I do not cut you off. | 9For the sake of my reputation I hold back my anger; for the sake of my prestige I restrain myself from destroying you. |
Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. | 10Look, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have purified you in the furnace of misery. |
For My own sake, for My own sake, I will do it; For how should My name be profaned? And I will not give My glory to another. | 11For my sake alone I will act, for how can I allow my name to be defiled? I will not share my glory with anyone else! |
“Listen to Me, O Jacob, And Israel, My called: I am He, I am the First, I am also the Last. | 12Listen to me, O Jacob, Israel, whom I summoned! I am the one; I am present at the very beginning and at the very end. |
Indeed My hand has laid the foundation of the earth, And My right hand has stretched out the heavens; When I call to them, They stand up together. | 13Yes, my hand founded the earth; my right hand spread out the sky. I summon them; they stand together. |
“All of you, assemble yourselves, and hear! Who among them has declared these things? The LORD loves him; He shall do His pleasure on Babylon, And His arm shall be against the Chaldeans. | 14All of you, gather together and listen! Who among them announced these things? The LORD's ally will carry out his desire against Babylon; he will exert his power against the Babylonians. |
I, even I, have spoken; Yes, I have called him, I have brought him, and his way will prosper. | 15I, I have spoken--yes, I have summoned him; I lead him and he will succeed. |
“Come near to Me, hear this: I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; From the time that it was, I was there. And now the Lord GOD and His Spirit Have sent Me.” | 16Approach me! Listen to this! From the very first I have not spoken in secret; when it happens, I am there." So now, the sovereign LORD has sent me, accompanied by his spirit. |
Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, The Holy One of Israel: “I am the LORD your God, Who teaches you to profit, Who leads you by the way you should go. | 17This is what the LORD, your protector, says, the Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD your God, who teaches you how to succeed, who leads you in the way you should go. |
Oh, that you had heeded My commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river, And your righteousness like the waves of the sea. | 18If only you had obeyed my commandments, prosperity would have flowed to you like a river, deliverance would have come to you like the waves of the sea. |
Your descendants also would have been like the sand, And the offspring of your body like the grains of sand; His name would not have been cut off Nor destroyed from before Me.” | 19Your descendants would have been as numerous as sand, and your children like its granules. Their name would not have been cut off and eliminated from my presence. |
Go forth from Babylon! Flee from the Chaldeans! With a voice of singing, Declare, proclaim this, Utter it to the end of the earth; Say, “The LORD has redeemed His servant Jacob!” | 20Leave Babylon! Flee from the Babylonians! Announce it with a shout of joy! Make this known! Proclaim it throughout the earth! Say, 'The LORD protects his servant Jacob. |
And they did not thirst When He led them through the deserts; He caused the waters to flow from the rock for them; He also split the rock, and the waters gushed out. | 21They do not thirst as he leads them through dry regions; he makes water flow out of a rock for them; he splits open a rock and water flows out.' |
“There is no peace,” says the LORD, “for the wicked.” | 22There will be no prosperity for the wicked," says the LORD. |
