The burden against Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.1A prophecy concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
God is jealous, and the LORD avenges; The LORD avenges and is furious. The LORD will take vengeance on His adversaries, And He reserves wrath for His enemies;2The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD takes vengeance and is filled with wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his foes and vents his wrath against his enemies.
The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, And will not at all acquit the wicked. The LORD has His way In the whirlwind and in the storm, And the clouds are the dust of His feet.3The LORD is slow to anger but great in power; the LORD will not leave the guilty unpunished. His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are the dust of his feet.
He rebukes the sea and makes it dry, And dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel wither, And the flower of Lebanon wilts.4He rebukes the sea and dries it up; he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither and the blossoms of Lebanon fade.
The mountains quake before Him, The hills melt, And the earth heaves at His presence, Yes, the world and all who dwell in it.5The mountains quake before him and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at his presence, the world and all who live in it.
Who can stand before His indignation? And who can endure the fierceness of His anger? His fury is poured out like fire, And the rocks are thrown down by Him.6Who can withstand his indignation? Who can endure his fierce anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; the rocks are shattered before him.
The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.7The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him,
But with an overflowing flood He will make an utter end of its place, And darkness will pursue His enemies.8but with an overwhelming flood he will make an end of Nineveh; he will pursue his foes into the realm of darkness.
What do you conspire against the LORD? He will make an utter end of it. Affliction will not rise up a second time.9Whatever they plot against the LORD he will bring to an end; trouble will not come a second time.
For while tangled like thorns, And while drunken like drunkards, They shall be devoured like stubble fully dried.10They will be entangled among thorns and drunk from their wine; they will be consumed like dry stubble.
From you comes forth one Who plots evil against the LORD, A wicked counselor.11From you, Nineveh, has one come forth who plots evil against the LORD and devises wicked plans.
Thus says the LORD: “Though they are safe, and likewise many, Yet in this manner they will be cut down When he passes through. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more;12This is what the LORD says: "Although they have allies and are numerous, they will be destroyed and pass away. Although I have afflicted you, Judah, I will afflict you no more.
For now I will break off his yoke from you, And burst your bonds apart.”13Now I will break their yoke from your neck and tear your shackles away."
The LORD has given a command concerning you: “Your name shall be perpetuated no longer. Out of the house of your gods I will cut off the carved image and the molded image. I will dig your grave, For you are vile.”14The LORD has given a command concerning you, Nineveh: "You will have no descendants to bear your name. I will destroy the images and idols that are in the temple of your gods. I will prepare your grave, for you are vile."
Behold, on the mountains The feet of him who brings good tidings, Who proclaims peace! O Judah, keep your appointed feasts, Perform your vows. For the wicked one shall no more pass through you; He is utterly cut off.15Look, there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your festivals, Judah, and fulfill your vows. No more will the wicked invade you; they will be completely destroyed.
