2 Corinthians 10
NKJV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
New King James VersionNew Living Translation
1Now I, Paul, myself am pleading with you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—who in presence am lowly among you, but being absent am bold toward you.1Now I, Paul, appeal to you with the gentleness and kindness of Christ—though I realize you think I am timid in person and bold only when I write from far away.
2But I beg you that when I am present I may not be bold with that confidence by which I intend to be bold against some, who think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.2Well, I am begging you now so that when I come I won’t have to be bold with those who think we act from human motives.
3For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh.3We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do.
4For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,4 We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.
5casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,5We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.
6and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.6And after you have become fully obedient, we will punish everyone who remains disobedient.
7Do you look at things according to the outward appearance? If anyone is convinced in himself that he is Christ’s, let him again consider this in himself, that just as he is Christ’s, even so we are Christ’s.7Look at the obvious facts. Those who say they belong to Christ must recognize that we belong to Christ as much as they do.
8For even if I should boast somewhat more about our authority, which the Lord gave us for edification and not for your destruction, I shall not be ashamed—8I may seem to be boasting too much about the authority given to us by the Lord. But our authority builds you up; it doesn’t tear you down. So I will not be ashamed of using my authority.
9lest I seem to terrify you by letters.9I’m not trying to frighten you by my letters.
10“For his letters,” they say, “are weighty and powerful, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.”10For some say, “Paul’s letters are demanding and forceful, but in person he is weak, and his speeches are worthless!”
11Let such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when we are absent, such we will also be in deed when we are present.11Those people should realize that our actions when we arrive in person will be as forceful as what we say in our letters from far away.
12For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.12Oh, don’t worry; we wouldn’t dare say that we are as wonderful as these other men who tell you how important they are! But they are only comparing themselves with each other, using themselves as the standard of measurement. How ignorant!
13We, however, will not boast beyond measure, but within the limits of the sphere which God appointed us—a sphere which especially includes you.13We will not boast about things done outside our area of authority. We will boast only about what has happened within the boundaries of the work God has given us, which includes our working with you.
14For we are not overextending ourselves (as though our authority did not extend to you), for it was to you that we came with the gospel of Christ;14We are not reaching beyond these boundaries when we claim authority over you, as if we had never visited you. For we were the first to travel all the way to Corinth with the Good News of Christ.
15not boasting of things beyond measure, that is, in other men’s labors, but having hope, that as your faith is increased, we shall be greatly enlarged by you in our sphere,15Nor do we boast and claim credit for the work someone else has done. Instead, we hope that your faith will grow so that the boundaries of our work among you will be extended.
16to preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man’s sphere of accomplishment.16Then we will be able to go and preach the Good News in other places far beyond you, where no one else is working. Then there will be no question of our boasting about work done in someone else’s territory.
17But “he who glories, let him glory in the LORD.”17As the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the LORD.”
18For not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends.18When people commend themselves, it doesn’t count for much. The important thing is for the Lord to commend them.
