| 1One day the members of the heavenly court came again to present themselves before the LORD, and the Accuser, Satan, came with them. | 1On another day the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them to present himself before Him. |
| 2“Where have you come from?” the LORD asked Satan. Satan answered the LORD, “I have been patrolling the earth, watching everything that’s going on.” | 2“Where have you come from?” said the LORD to Satan. “From roaming through the earth,” he replied, “and walking back and forth in it.” |
| 3Then the LORD asked Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth. He is blameless—a man of complete integrity. He fears God and stays away from evil. And he has maintained his integrity, even though you urged me to harm him without cause.” | 3Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil. He still retains his integrity, even though you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause.” |
| 4Satan replied to the LORD, “Skin for skin! A man will give up everything he has to save his life. | 4“Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give up all he owns in exchange for his life. |
| 5But reach out and take away his health, and he will surely curse you to your face!” | 5But stretch out Your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse You to Your face.” |
| 6“All right, do with him as you please,” the LORD said to Satan. “But spare his life.” | 6“Very well,” said the LORD to Satan. “He is in your hands, but you must spare his life.” |
| 7So Satan left the LORD’s presence, and he struck Job with terrible boils from head to foot. | 7So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and infected Job with terrible boils from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. |
| 8Job scraped his skin with a piece of broken pottery as he sat among the ashes. | 8And Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself as he sat among the ashes. |
| 9His wife said to him, “Are you still trying to maintain your integrity? Curse God and die.” | 9Then Job’s wife said to him, “Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God and die!” |
| 10But Job replied, “You talk like a foolish woman. Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?” So in all this, Job said nothing wrong. Job’s Three Friends Share His Anguish | 10“You speak as a foolish woman speaks,” he told her. “Should we accept from God only good and not adversity?” In all this, Job did not sin in what he said. |
| 11When three of Job’s friends heard of the tragedy he had suffered, they got together and traveled from their homes to comfort and console him. Their names were Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. | 11Now when Job’s three friends—Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite—heard about all this adversity that had come upon him, each of them came from his home, and they met together to go and sympathize with Job and comfort him. |
| 12When they saw Job from a distance, they scarcely recognized him. Wailing loudly, they tore their robes and threw dust into the air over their heads to show their grief. | 12When they lifted up their eyes from afar, they could barely recognize Job. They began to weep aloud, and each man tore his robe and threw dust in the air over his head. |
| 13Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and nights. No one said a word to Job, for they saw that his suffering was too great for words. | 13Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, but no one spoke a word to him because they saw how intense his suffering was. |
