Then Joshua summoned all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, including their elders, leaders, judges, and officers. So they came and presented themselves to God.1Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem and summoned Israel's elders, leaders, judges, and officers, and they presented themselves before God.
Joshua said to the people, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Long ago your ancestors, including Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River, and they worshiped other gods.2Joshua said to all the people, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Long ago your ancestors, including Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshiped other gods.
But I took your ancestor Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him into the land of Canaan. I gave him many descendants through his son Isaac.3But I took your father Abraham from the region beyond the Euphrates River, led him throughout the land of Canaan, and multiplied his descendants. I gave him Isaac,
To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave the mountains of Seir, while Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.4and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I gave the hill country of Seir to Esau as a possession. "'Jacob and his sons, however, went down to Egypt.
“Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I brought terrible plagues on Egypt; and afterward I brought you out as a free people.5I sent Moses and Aaron, and I defeated Egypt by what I did within it, and afterward I brought you out.
But when your ancestors arrived at the Red Sea, the Egyptians chased after you with chariots and charioteers.6When I brought your fathers out of Egypt and you reached the Red Sea, the Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen as far as the sea.
When your ancestors cried out to the LORD, I put darkness between you and the Egyptians. I brought the sea crashing down on the Egyptians, drowning them. With your very own eyes you saw what I did. Then you lived in the wilderness for many years.7Your fathers cried out to the LORD, so he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea over them, engulfing them. Your own eyes saw what I did to Egypt. After that, you lived in the wilderness a long time.
“Finally, I brought you into the land of the Amorites on the east side of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I destroyed them before you. I gave you victory over them, and you took possession of their land.8"'Later, I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived beyond the Jordan. They fought against you, but I handed them over to you. You possessed their land, and I annihilated them before you.
Then Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, started a war against Israel. He summoned Balaam son of Beor to curse you,9Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, set out to fight against Israel. He sent for Balaam son of Beor to curse you,
but I would not listen to him. Instead, I made Balaam bless you, and so I rescued you from Balak.10but I would not listen to Balaam. Instead, he repeatedly blessed you, and I rescued you from him.
“When you crossed the Jordan River and came to Jericho, the men of Jericho fought against you, as did the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. But I gave you victory over them.11"'You then crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. Jericho's citizens--as well as the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hethites, Girgashites, Hivites, and Jebusites--fought against you, but I handed them over to you.
And I sent terror ahead of you to drive out the two kings of the Amorites. It was not your swords or bows that brought you victory.12I sent hornets ahead of you, and they drove out the two Amorite kings before you. It was not by your sword or bow.
I gave you land you had not worked on, and I gave you towns you did not build—the towns where you are now living. I gave you vineyards and olive groves for food, though you did not plant them.13I gave you a land you did not labor for, and cities you did not build, though you live in them; you are eating from vineyards and olive groves you did not plant.'
“So fear the LORD and serve him wholeheartedly. Put away forever the idols your ancestors worshiped when they lived beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt. Serve the LORD alone.14"Therefore, fear the LORD and worship him in sincerity and truth. Get rid of the gods your fathers worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and worship the LORD.
But if you refuse to serve the LORD, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD.”15But if it doesn't please you to worship the LORD, choose for yourselves today: Which will you worship--the gods your fathers worshiped beyond the Euphrates River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living? As for me and my family, we will worship the LORD."
The people replied, “We would never abandon the LORD and serve other gods.16The people replied, "We will certainly not abandon the LORD to worship other gods!
For the LORD our God is the one who rescued us and our ancestors from slavery in the land of Egypt. He performed mighty miracles before our very eyes. As we traveled through the wilderness among our enemies, he preserved us.17For the LORD our God brought us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery, and performed these great signs before our eyes. He also protected us all along the way we went and among all the peoples whose lands we traveled through.
It was the LORD who drove out the Amorites and the other nations living here in the land. So we, too, will serve the LORD, for he alone is our God.”18The LORD drove out before us all the peoples, including the Amorites who lived in the land. We too will worship the LORD, because he is our God."
Then Joshua warned the people, “You are not able to serve the LORD, for he is a holy and jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins.19But Joshua told the people, "You will not be able to worship the LORD, because he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions and sins.
If you abandon the LORD and serve other gods, he will turn against you and destroy you, even though he has been so good to you.”20If you abandon the LORD and worship foreign gods, he will turn against you, harm you, and completely destroy you, after he has been good to you."
But the people answered Joshua, “No, we will serve the LORD!”21"No!" the people answered Joshua. "We will worship the LORD."
“You are a witness to your own decision,” Joshua said. “You have chosen to serve the LORD.” “Yes,” they replied, “we are witnesses to what we have said.”22Joshua then told the people, "You are witnesses against yourselves that you yourselves have chosen to worship the LORD." "We are witnesses," they said.
“All right then,” Joshua said, “destroy the idols among you, and turn your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel.”23"Then get rid of the foreign gods that are among you and turn your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel."
The people said to Joshua, “We will serve the LORD our God. We will obey him alone.”24So the people said to Joshua, "We will worship the LORD our God and obey him."
So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day at Shechem, committing them to follow the decrees and regulations of the LORD.25On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people at Shechem and established a statute and ordinance for them.
Joshua recorded these things in the Book of God’s Instructions. As a reminder of their agreement, he took a huge stone and rolled it beneath the terebinth tree beside the Tabernacle of the LORD.26Joshua recorded these things in the book of the law of God; he also took a large stone and set it up there under the oak at the sanctuary of the LORD.
Joshua said to all the people, “This stone has heard everything the LORD said to us. It will be a witness to testify against you if you go back on your word to God.”27And Joshua said to all the people, "You see this stone--it will be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words the LORD said to us, and it will be a witness against you, so that you will not deny your God."
Then Joshua sent all the people away to their own homelands. Leaders Buried in the Promised Land28Then Joshua sent the people away, each to his own inheritance.
After this, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of 110.29After these things, the LORD's servant, Joshua son of Nun, died at the age of 110.
They buried him in the land he had been allocated, at Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.30They buried him in his allotted territory at Timnath-serah, in the hill country of Ephraim north of Mount Gaash.
The people of Israel served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him—those who had personally experienced all that the LORD had done for Israel.31Israel worshiped the LORD throughout Joshua's lifetime and during the lifetimes of the elders who outlived Joshua and who had experienced all the works the LORD had done for Israel.
The bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought along with them when they left Egypt, were buried at Shechem, in the plot of land Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor for 100 pieces of silver. This land was located in the territory allotted to the descendants of Joseph.32Joseph's bones, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried at Shechem in the parcel of land Jacob had purchased from the sons of Hamor, Shechem's father, for a hundred pieces of silver. It was an inheritance for Joseph's descendants.
Eleazar son of Aaron also died. He was buried in the hill country of Ephraim, in the town of Gibeah, which had been given to his son Phinehas.33And Eleazar son of Aaron died, and they buried him at Gibeah, which had been given to his son Phinehas in the hill country of Ephraim.
