New Living TranslationEnglish Standard Version
Some time later, the LORD spoke to Abram in a vision and said to him, “Do not be afraid, Abram, for I will protect you, and your reward will be great.”1After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”
But Abram replied, “O Sovereign LORD, what good are all your blessings when I don’t even have a son? Since you’ve given me no children, Eliezer of Damascus, a servant in my household, will inherit all my wealth.2But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”
You have given me no descendants of my own, so one of my servants will be my heir.”3And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.”
Then the LORD said to him, “No, your servant will not be your heir, for you will have a son of your own who will be your heir.”4And behold, the word of the LORD came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.”
Then the LORD took Abram outside and said to him, “Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have!”5And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”
And Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD counted him as righteous because of his faith.6And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
Then the LORD told him, “I am the LORD who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as your possession.”7And he said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.”
But Abram replied, “O Sovereign LORD, how can I be sure that I will actually possess it?”8But he said, “O Lord GOD, how am I to know that I shall possess it?”
The LORD told him, “Bring me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”9He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”
So Abram presented all these to him and killed them. Then he cut each animal down the middle and laid the halves side by side; he did not, however, cut the birds in half.10And he brought him all these, cut them in half, and laid each half over against the other. But he did not cut the birds in half.
Some vultures swooped down to eat the carcasses, but Abram chased them away.11And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
As the sun was going down, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a terrifying darkness came down over him.12As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him.
Then the LORD said to Abram, “You can be sure that your descendants will be strangers in a foreign land, where they will be oppressed as slaves for 400 years.13Then the LORD said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years.
But I will punish the nation that enslaves them, and in the end they will come away with great wealth.14But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions.
(As for you, you will die in peace and be buried at a ripe old age.)15As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age.
After four generations your descendants will return here to this land, for the sins of the Amorites do not yet warrant their destruction.”16And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”
After the sun went down and darkness fell, Abram saw a smoking firepot and a flaming torch pass between the halves of the carcasses.17When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.
So the LORD made a covenant with Abram that day and said, “I have given this land to your descendants, all the way from the border of Egypt to the great Euphrates River—18On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates,
the land now occupied by the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites,19the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,
Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites,20the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,
Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites, and Jebusites.”21the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”
