Some time later, the LORD spoke to Abram in a vision and said to him, “Do not be afraid, Abram, for I will protect you, and your reward will be great.”1After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, "Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; Your reward shall be very great."
But Abram replied, “O Sovereign LORD, what good are all your blessings when I don’t even have a son? Since you’ve given me no children, Eliezer of Damascus, a servant in my household, will inherit all my wealth.2Abram said, "O Lord GOD, what will You give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?"
You have given me no descendants of my own, so one of my servants will be my heir.”3And Abram said, "Since You have given no offspring to me, one born in my house is my heir."
Then the LORD said to him, “No, your servant will not be your heir, for you will have a son of your own who will be your heir.”4Then behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, "This man will not be your heir; but one who will come forth from your own body, he shall be your heir."
Then the LORD took Abram outside and said to him, “Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have!”5And He took him outside and said, "Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them." And He said to him, "So shall your descendants be."
And Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD counted him as righteous because of his faith.6Then he believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.
Then the LORD told him, “I am the LORD who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as your possession.”7And He said to him, "I am the LORD who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess it."
But Abram replied, “O Sovereign LORD, how can I be sure that I will actually possess it?”8He said, "O Lord GOD, how may I know that I will possess it?"
The LORD told him, “Bring me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”9So He said to him, "Bring Me a three year old heifer, and a three year old female goat, and a three year old ram, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon."
So Abram presented all these to him and killed them. Then he cut each animal down the middle and laid the halves side by side; he did not, however, cut the birds in half.10Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, and laid each half opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds.
Some vultures swooped down to eat the carcasses, but Abram chased them away.11The birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.
As the sun was going down, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a terrifying darkness came down over him.12Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, terror and great darkness fell upon him.
Then the LORD said to Abram, “You can be sure that your descendants will be strangers in a foreign land, where they will be oppressed as slaves for 400 years.13God said to Abram, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years.
But I will punish the nation that enslaves them, and in the end they will come away with great wealth.14"But I will also judge the nation whom they will serve, and afterward they will come out with many possessions.
(As for you, you will die in peace and be buried at a ripe old age.)15"As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you will be buried at a good old age.
After four generations your descendants will return here to this land, for the sins of the Amorites do not yet warrant their destruction.”16"Then in the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete."
After the sun went down and darkness fell, Abram saw a smoking firepot and a flaming torch pass between the halves of the carcasses.17It came about when the sun had set, that it was very dark, and behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a flaming torch which passed between these pieces.
So the LORD made a covenant with Abram that day and said, “I have given this land to your descendants, all the way from the border of Egypt to the great Euphrates River—18On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your descendants I have given this land, From the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates:
the land now occupied by the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites,19the Kenite and the Kenizzite and the Kadmonite
Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites,20and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Rephaim
Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites, and Jebusites.”21and the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Girgashite and the Jebusite."
